Agree with the second part of your responsebut could not disagree more with your first comment. Just because anti-semitism was fashionable in the 30's as was segregation in the south does not mean that the people who followed that did not have flawed characters.

Saying being a Nazi sympathizer did not mean being an antisemite is like saying you could be a communist without believing in class struggle. America was very antisemitic at the turn of the century. Wealthy industrialists like Ford didn't mince words when it came to Jews. To think that this was any different for your average Nazi sympathizer is quite.... a stretch.

My belief is that the average American was relatively ignorant of the Nazi ideology in the 30's. I don't think that anti-semitism was the driving force for most Nazi sympathizers of that era.

You're giving people in the 1930s too little credit. It was well known that Nazi Germany was an antisemitic place. I doubt somebody who was educated would have supported them simply because they had a pretty flag. He probably didn't support burning Jews in ovens but I have no doubt that as part of America's upper middle class he was clearly antisemitic if he did in fact support the Nazis. It just wouldn't make sense if he didn't. Nazi ideology always reverts to race. There's no way around it.
