"Strain on the power grid has been causing scattered outages across the area, but in New Jersey it appears Mother Nature had the upper hand. According to PSE&G, roughly 14,000 customers lost service state-wide, with a huge chunk, approximately 4,600, in the dark in New Milford.
“We are working to have folks restored within two hours,” PSE&G spokesperson Lindsey Puliti told CBS 2.
Con Edison confirmed a new record for usage of 13,322 megawatts at 5 p.m. Before Friday, the all-time peak record was 13,189 megawatts set on July 22, 2011. That mark was first broken at 2 p.m. Friday, and usage grew through the afternoon.Thousands lost electricity Thursday night in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, forcing residents to sweat it out with no air-conditioning." Now just imagine if everyone was plugging their cars in too.

Excellent point.

Just imagine if we had coastal wind and solar to supplement. Just imagine if homeowners got credits for installing solar or wind to not only charge their EV's, but power their homes. Imagine if everyone that wasn't using their cars could back feed into the grid and make up that power.... or back feed to their house to keep the lights on when the grid fails.

What if, what if, what if...

Do you know what's better than quickly out of date renewable energy resources? Upgrading the infrastructure if your willing to pay for it now will pay off greatly in long run.

Not a problem--those folks would be sitting in a Starbucks waiting for their Tesla's batteries to be switched out for free while they keep warm in the frigid AC with a half-caff iFrapresso with organic free-range chocolate drizzle

Out of date renewables energy sources? lost me.

But I agree that our infrastructure is sorely needed as one part of the solution.

They are incredibly inefficient vs. cost and as you buy them something new and much more efficient comes along, you know this feeling whenever you buy a computer.

If everyone was plugging their cars, most likely we wouldn't have these sever weather anomalies to begin with... but that is beside the point.

How imagine if we had followed countries in Europe and everyone had solar panels on their rooftops, or imagine instead massive austerity policies or propagating wars that no one wants or paid for we had actually fix and failing infrastructure, including the 50+ year old power grid system.

Diving mullah

and just imagine if we had modern nuclear power plants, plenty of them, and cheap enough electricity that plugging in cars would make sense.

When you find s safe place to store the waste that doesn't burden the next 4000 future generations... go for it.

When I hear (or read people) say that, can't help but smile and node politely.... Because Cheap Nuclear power plant is as abundant and plentiful as a 50 year virgin hooker!

Just little facts about about nuclear power...To be honest I love nuclear power and I dedicated big portion of my college years studying and researching in that field.

First of all No Private company will touch nuclear power with a 100 foot poll. The basic capital of breaking ground for nuclear power is horrendous. So government has to step in and build the plant. Even after the government foots all the bills and with huge tax incentives beg private corporation to take over and run it (basically they are giving it away), private companies wouldn't touch it until congress passed limited liability clause and limited the companies liability in case of disaster and government or rather the tax payer would assume 99% of the responsibility.

Now say you did all of that...You have one brand new Nuclear Power Plant. Imagine you filled all the pyramids of Egypt with uranium back during the Egypt's "modern Era" which was 2000 years ago. That would mean Egypt would have had 25 years electricity worth. But to this day they still would have had spend money and resource guarding the waste.

This is not even the kicker...The kicker is If you collect all the Uranium supplies on earth, you would have had about 50 years of fuel rod worth (assuming you use military grade) or about 200 years commercial grade. Lets say you build ten and give each 10 years worth of fuel and after 20 years you will have 10 very shiny buildings that would utterly be worthless but still have to spend **** load of money guard and maintain them and hope no leak would find its way to underground water supply food source, or ocean.

Not exactly a bargain is it??

Many nuclear power plants around the world (specially Europe) are being phased out, because people realize despite the high risks and trouble the return is very little.

If only there were some way to get, like, more electricity.

Yeah, they allocated billions to "investing in infrastructure and creating jobs" but instead they invested in banks and bureaucrats. Our infrastructure is arcane and never becomes a priority even though it would employ thousands of ordinary Americans. Instead, bankers get 50 million dollar bonuses and the rest are arguing about a $7.25 minimum wage.

Good job Fearless Leaders

Deep, very deep underground. Besides for the the amount of energy nuclear power produces it has very little waste.

The waste issue is not limited to the full rods. That whole plant has to be disassembled and stored somewhere too due to its contamination when it is done as a good bit of it cannot be easily or cheaply incinerated . I am not opposed to nuclear energy, mind you, but there are aspects to it that people overlook.

Did you even read the OP?

Thousands lost electricity Thursday night in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx, forcing residents to sweat it out with no air-conditioning."

I should have been clearer.

I was referring to later in the evening when usage goes down, even in heat waves.

Note that when they talk about power going out "at night", they mean after 6pm even though it's still light out until about 9pm. By midnight, usage is down and people could charge without stressing the system.

How many grams does it take to contaminate soils, groundwater. Do you know the interconnectedness of very very deep underground structures? How much will it cost? Can you guarantee the 10,000 years from now, someone drilling for whatever won't bring it back up? The only nuclear power that doesn't pose a risk is fusion. And if very very deep underground was such an easy answer, why aren't we doing it now?

If you knew half as much as you and other know it alls claimed you'd realize the French are using American technology and producing a lot less waste out of MODERN facilities. Much of the waste us used as fuel onsite. The hurdles we have are not technical, not financial but political and legal. So suck it up and pay for your beloved legal and political hurdles and let technology rot instead of giving people cheaper, cleaner and more efficient power.

Fair enough but not everyone works during the day and night shift workers plugging in during the time when gov is telling people to turn down AC and when the grid id stressed to the limit elec cars would push it over the edge.

Maybe people who work night shift could be provided with access to a plug as a condition of agreeing to work the night shift.

undoubtedly, a shift to electric cars would, by itself, mean an increase in demand for electricity. Overall, I think the shift would be good for us, but there's certainly some "wrinkles" that will need to be ironed out.

IMO elec cars are out of the frying pan into the fire. I like the hybrid thing where cars make their own elec. I think that is great technology that is in its infancy and we could soon see cars getting 100 MPG with it.

When something has an extremely long half-life, that means it's less dangerous, not more dangerous. Because it's radiating slowly.

The reason we haven't solved this problem is people like you freaking the **** out about things that aren't really a problem.
