The two scenarios I could see, are A Republican break away on immigration through Tom Tancredo, who could also get support from social Conservatives if The Republicans nominate a social lidral like Guliani. The other scenario I could see is John McCain running as an independent centrist if The Republicans nominate a conservative like Bill Frist or George Allen.
There could also be a split from The Left, possibly an Anti-War ticket of Kucinich or Feingold, but I think The Dems are to desperate to get back in power to split.

independent candidates never matter in two party systems. They make alot of noise, some times cost one candidate the election, but rarely get more than 5%. anyhow, '08 is a while from now. We should start thinking about '06 first.

If John McCain ran as an independent he'd get a lot more than 5% of the vote, and he'd stand a very good chance of winning outright.

I'm somewhat sure that he won't do that.

He would probably still do better running as a Republican. If its him vs. Hillary in 2008, he has my vote regardless of what ticket he is on.
