The post office is currently $160 Billion in debt; $78 Billion of that since 2007 - 2019.

The US Government used to pick up the deficit each year until a crushing postal workers union strike in 1970. That then lead to Congress passing and President Nixon signing the Postal Reorganization Act which runs the post office as we know it today.

They are not supposed to have a deficit, but the taxpayers pour billions into the USPS every year.

Why USPS may run out of money before the end of 2020 - Business Insider

USPS has lost $78 billion since 2007 despite receiving billions from taxpayers every year. Democrats still want a bailout. | Congressman Fred Keller

US Postage should cost what it cost. If a 1st class letter needs to increase from 55¢ to $2 then it should be raised.

Let the people and businesses that use the mail system pay for it. Or allow competition via private companies.

I don't think I have mailed anything at all in 2020.

This is what is going on at the Post Office - not Trump's fault.

The USPS possibly could use some looking at.

However, lets wait until after the elections.

Can't be true because it is not a conspiracy by Trump to deny Biden his entitled promotion

To be fair, the article points out that the USPS could literally be insolvent before that time...

BINGO!!!!

So here is the problem for Trumpets:
- We are going into an election in a PANDEMIC that their boy has ignored and downplayed to perpetuity promoting wildassed remedies and other horsecrap along the way
- Has brought in yet another Political Hack to run yet another government service (oh by the way, USPS provides a government guaranteed service....ITS NOT A BUSINESS)
- while some of what said Political Hack wants to do like deactivating flat sorters might be justifiable (are flats the only sorters he is deactivating...probably not) cutting overtime and offering early retirement at this time is entirely uncalled for as was the Friday night massacre at USPS
- In the middle of all that said Political Hack (DaJoy) sends notice to multiple states that some mail-in voters might be disenfranchised
- just as Donald Duck says the silent part out loud and literally tells the world he does not want to provide money to USPS specifically to sabotage it and mail-in voting apparently completely ignoring that sabotaging USPS sabotages much more than mail-in ballots. It sabotages prescription drug deliveries, it sabotages rural delivery, it sabotages the timely delivery of and payment of bills.

The last bullet point is the coup de' grace for Donnie Boy and his buttboy DaJoy on this topic because we are close enough to the election so that even casual voters are watching and its been 3.5 years of Donnie's crap. Outside of his loyal base, nobody believes him or in him and most believe if he is capable of sabotaging USPS. He is capable of any bare faced abuse of the American people. They are right. Donnie is capable of anything in order to gain or maintain power.

Now why don't you elaborate on why they have that debt and why it is unique to the post office.

Then give them some funding for six months and if there is actually an issue, address it in 2021

That would be great if a straight funding bill were brought into Congress. Unfortunately that rarely happens.

Right now during a pandemic, there is an increased need for a reliable mail system. It is appropriate that it is in the COVID funding packages.

The USPS was a public service before the Constitution was signed. See the Sen. Manchin beat down of Trump over his sabotage of the postal service and how it hurts rural folks in West Virginia.

These two lines are all you need to know about the OP's intentions... it is basically the 'la la la i can't hear you' defense of President OrangeGlow.

You can lose the QAnon CT that Biden is entitled to a promotion. Why do trumpQins sport trump undermining the USA?

There are a lot of misconceptions there I might be able to help you with.

1) The USPS is a Federally owned business that employs 600,000 people and sells goods and services. The Federal government treats USPS as though it should be a self-sustaining business so it isn’t fully funded and it has been operating at loss for 14 consecutive years - resulting in the accrual of nearly $200 billion in debt and tens of billions of dollars in missed payments for its legally mandated employee health benefit and pension program.

2) USPS closed 38% of its mail processing centers as a cost saving measure between 2012-2014. This is going to be the biggest hurdle for the USPS processing an unprecedented volume of mail-ballots in a timely fashion.

3) USPS warned the House Oversight Committee in April that it would be insolvent by the end of September without a $75 billion bailout. Nobody listened. The best the House was willing to offer was a $10 billion Treasury loan in the CARES Act. The House needs to pass a stand-alone bill for the rest of that funding.

There is $25 billion for the USPS in the HEROES act passed by the house and sent to the senate on 5/20.

Yeah, the House jammed 1/3rd of what USPS said it needed into a bill with trillions of dollars in poison pills. If they’re serious about saving USPS then it needs to be 100% of what they need as a stand-alone bill OR they need to stop taking the position on the HEROES Act that everyone else can go to hell unless the unemployed get exactly $600.

It sound like they listened just fine... They also passed a bill back in Feb to get rid of the stupid pre funding requirement which is driving a lot of their financial problems... Still sitting on McConnell's desk...

Where has the GOP senate been?

McConnellism refuses to negotiate. Every at-risk GOP Senator will be held accountable, including those whose constituents in rural areas need the USPS the most.

Its a government guaranteed service written into the Constitution and nobody has written it out of the Constitution. Its not a business.

The United States Postal Service (USPS; also known as the Post Office, U.S. Mail, or Postal Service) is an independent agency of the executive branch of the United States federal government responsible for providing postal service in the United States, including its insular areas and associated states.

Also those that claim that the language in the Constitution does not guarantee it as a government service need to look up the meaning of the word "shall" in constitutional law. That should quickly end that debate.

The assault against the Postal Service began on Bill Clinton's watch, possibly before.

Dick Armey and cohorts, working on behalf of Fed Ex and UPS, generated legislation that forced the Postal Service into unrealistic and grossly unfair accounting procedures. That set the stage for what we're seeing now.

George Bush piled on and generated new measures and practices that made matters worse. Now Trump wants to administer the coup de grace. Fascism thrives in the United States.

I have no idea why so many Pols have had it in for the USPS all these years ....but they have. USPS happens to be the most respected US government service even after all of the Machiavellian maneuvers of past Pols. This Trumpian effort is far more bare faced and much more damaging in my view, not necessarily because of the decommissioning of some number of flat sorters. However, I would suggest that any changes to postal service in the midst of a Pandemic and 3 months ahead of an election is flat ridiculous, flat unscrupulous and needs be stopped IMMEDIATELY.

The post office paid a generous pension. That's what's costing the post office so much money, paying all those retirees.

How come right wingers are worried about the $160 billion the USPS has lost but not the trillions that the USAF has lost?
