I really don't think you understand ANYTHING about rural NC. Why does everyone equate wanting a "simple life" to = "Those people are dumb". I chose to leave the city and return to the country, and many people here have turned down better jobs to live in the country as well. That doesn't make them dumb, it makes them different from you.

And that, seems to be a crime to you for some reason.

I spent a brief time in that part of the world and loved the countryside and the people. I've also had tourists visit from North Carolina recently and they were gracious and friendly, even when Duke lost.. Often regret not living there myself.
