Pope Francis excommunicates pro-gay marriage priest. He's not the liberal the media wants – Telegraph Blogs

From all of last week's headlines saying that the Pope wants to forget this nonsense about abortion and gays, you'd imagine that Germaine Greer had been elected to run the Catholic Church. Actually what the Pope was saying was that he wants the Church to talk more about what it's for than what it's against. But that doesn't mean it won't still be against those things that contradict its teachings and traditions.

The document might give no explicit reason, but the reason is implicit and well understood: Reynolds has offended Mother Church with his politics. It's interesting to note that the former priest tells The Age that he "wants the same thing as the Pope" which is "to encourage reform and clear need for renewal in the church." I read from this that Reynolds has, like many liberals, misunderstood Francis' words. Structural reform is clearly necessary to prevent future horrors like the child abuse scandal, and renewal is something that Christians always desire. But Reynolds would throw out Catholic doctrine – something Francis would never do because he is, despite the best wishes of so many in the media, a Catholic. His treatment of Reynolds proves that point.

Can't wait to hear the fallout from this....

I don't agree with the Church's anti-SSM stance, but that is the religion and if people want to be part of that religion, they need to adhere to those rules. There is a reason I'm not a Catholic anymore and it has nothing to do with excommunication.

I still think the Pope's stance on many issues of non-involvment is still a good message.

I wonder if he actually thinks he's sending someone to hell by doing this. I mean, if he did, that would be sadism on a level that most people can't really fathom.

Ah well, this is just proof that even a progressive religious voice is still regressive and holding us back from being a truly civilized species. Adding religion to something good just complicates it and often makes it worse.

I think it is a little more complicated than that. Excommunication does not send the sinner to hell. It is the sin that does that.

Should the church continue to talk about how much it's membership hates gays or how many goodworks the membership does?

EDIT: Thinking about it, the church membership puts a lot more effort into espousing hatred than it does in doing good deeds. No wonder Church membership is down.

Again, never said he'd change policy or doctrine.

So you admit all that wishful thinking in that thread was complete delusion

Thanks for clarifying

It's a bait thread. He wants a place to start spewing his hatred.

It may be a bait thread. It is also canonical law and what you would expect the Pope to do.

He never said there would be a change in church policy or doctrine regarding gays, abortion, sex, etc, he just said that perhaps its not best if the church obsesses over such things and that it would be better if people heard other messages from the church as well.

Yes, it it is not best if the church obsesses with gay pedophilia and it would be better if people heard other messages from the church as well for a change.

I've thought about it a lot, actually, and when I do, I am surprised and saddened yet again by those who desire to find only fault.

And Obama excommunicated Lois Lerner. The Pope has his religion, Obama, one might say, has his.
