Of the people who watched it. The SOTU has become such a partisan political tool full of the same ole' rhetoric that people disinterested in hearing the same old BS just don't watch it. Even here at a forum titled DebatePolitics several commented that they were not watching.

The same data that produced the poll approval results posted up 2:3 watching and responding were Republicans.

The butthurt on the Left is huge.

It was a well written speech yet much of 'what lies ahead' depends on congressional action and/or the actions of foreign governments. The idea that adding 20% more miles of physical barriers on the border (within a year or two?) will 'fix' illegal immigration is simply wishful thinking.

So long as "access to" better jobs, infrastructure and social programs is still available to all US residents then illegal immigration will continue much as it is now. I wonder what ever happened to the idea of universal E-Verify or how sanctuary states/cities are considered any worse than employers who hire (exploit?) illegal immigrant labor.

How? If 76% of viewers liked the speech, and over half (per the last election results) of Americans are Lefties, why would anyone on the Left be butthurt? Just be happy that Trump's speech writers did a good job for once, and that Trump sounding like he was a cultist in a trance for minutes at a time, doing his best to sound sincere, didn't ruin it for everyone. I mean, he went on and on about WW2 and how great America was in it, who's gonna say they don't like that? ;)

Tsk, American...the Left hates Trump, you berate them. They finally give him a nod for something...and you berate them. Why are you so butthurt, American?

So you're basically an anti-wall guy because it won't solve 100% of the problem at the border. Name me one single thing that will. Please, expound for me one single thing with solve 100% all by itself. I'm waiting.

I love when right wingers use terms like "butt hurt" since it reveals their own personal bitterness about the situation Trump has placed them in. The ones with posterior pain seem to be the right wing these days. Everybody on the left that I know of is very optimistic and flying high.

Exactly. In the big scheme of things, this speech will mean nothing in a matter of hours or days at the most when Trump reverts to his old form of being himself and does not have a carefully crafted speech to read off a teleprompter, or have a crowd of kids, widows and WWII vets to play off of, or have the GOP act like jack-in-the-boxes popping up every thirty seconds on cue.

In 1974 Richard Nixon gave a similar speech in his annual State of the Union and it is today remembered for one thing - Nixon saying that "one year of Watergate is enough". He too hated investigations and called for an end to them.

190 days later he resigned in disgrace.

I'm no fan of Trump, but he played this one about as well as he possibly could have. Coming off that shutdown and with his ratings where they are, he didn't have the tantrum some expected. Instead, he went for values we can understand. Protect the borders, keep socialism from ruining our great country, etc. I admit, I'm enjoying the scurrying I see from the left on this one.

It won't take him long to give them more ammunition. They should just let him take this one.

I thought it was an "effective" speech given Trump's perspective and apparently the perspective of his entire political team. It was yet another bit of rhetorical oratory aimed at his voters spiced up with an inordinate number of special guest easy applause lines. If they think they can pull off 2016 again, more power to them. In fact I am completely happy if they continue on the political path they are on as I think it virtually impossible for them to repeat 2016.

To be fair we don't know the ratings of the sotu. It could be two million people that tuned in. It could be 5. That's a sliver of the amount of Americans who voted in the last election. I would say that at least half of the people who watched it or probably more are Trump supporters.

The butthurt on the Left is huge.

So does this mean that Michael Cohen is now back working for Trump?

Hmm...

And that he finally figured out how to properly rig a poll?

Actually, this has Putin's fingerprints all over it. Adam Schiff really should get his committee to look into this kind of thing because, obviously, it's been manipulated to mislead the American public, corrupt the media and obstruct justice.

Changing the federal income tax code such that direct labor costs for (W-2 or 1099) employees can be deducted only if those employees have a current (annual) E-Verify certification would be much more effective. Having a federal income tax code that makes the use of illegal immigrant labor 100% tax deductible for 'job creators' is simply insane.

Obviously, nothing is going to be 100% effective - since only about 40% of new illegal immigrants are now border jumpers then reducing that to even 20% would not be that much of an improvement. In order to seriously limit illegal immigration we must remove the economic incentive to do so as much as possible.

Wow, such poignant, well-reasoned analysis.

When your entire argument is “DURRRR UR BUTTHURT,” maybe you should shut it and leave the politics to us adults.

I think you lost credibility criticizing anyone else's name calling when you referred to all Trump supporters as diseased animals in another thread. Somehow you trying to seem superior here just has a hint of irony and mostly just looks sad.

It was a good speech, perhaps the best he has ever given. But they were the words of a speech writer, not Trump's. We know what Trump's words sound like.

Like most SOTUs a lot of it was sentimental fluff, honoring WWII vets and first responders, cancer survivors, etc. I was waiting for him to pull out a puppy or kitten or something.

When he mentioned the increasing percentage of women in the workforce, I could not help but think about the women who were elected to Congress in November. I think that's a workforce he'd rather not think about.

I expect the SOTU bump will embolden Trump to shut down the government when Pelosi doesn't give Trump the wall. In other words, this speech is now over. Tomorrow, it's business as usual. Bring on the tweets.

It was a speech I'm sure thrilled the R's. Let's wait and see how bipartisan he acts. My bet, within a few days he will be on twitter demonizing the dems again about open borders and why he WILL build a wall for america's safety.
