Poll: Majority of UK residents want second Brexit referendum

The majority of people in the United Kingdom said they would support a second Brexit referendum, according to a new poll. A Sky News survey published Monday found that 53 percent of respondents would support holding a referendum allowing them to choose between leaving the European Union (EU) as agreed to in the deal negotiated by the EU, leaving without a deal or remaining in the EU. Thirty-six percent opposed a second referendum. The poll also found that a majority of respondents said they would vote against Brexit if a second referendum were held. Fifty-three percent said they would vote against leaving the EU, while 32 percent would support leaving the EU without a deal. Sixteen percent said they would vote for leaving on the terms of the negotiated deal. Last month, the leaders of the EU approved a deal for the United Kingdom to leave the EU. If the deal is approved by politicians in the United Kingdom, the country will leave the EU in March.

It continues to be my position that the initial Brexit referendum campaign was seriously flawed. Untruths were posited about the economic benefits of leaving the EU. It seems no one truly understood the myriad ramifications of Brexit. The British government did not thoroughly investigate the affects of a Brexit. There were foreign influences and perhaps even foreign funding in support of Brexit. The British people were not properly educated on what a Brexit would mean for them personally and the UK collectively.

My two cents as a non-european, but with the opposite opinion. I think with such a divisive but important issue there is no harm in holding a series of referendums over these important issues as things change and develop.

The problem is really with the pro-EU hypocrisy as it was made very clear in the lead up to the last vote, no matter how narrow a margin of victory they would have used the referendum result to deny any future Brexit. A poll though is meaningless as to this reasoning, there is obviously a split on the issue with strong public support on both sides.

The costs and benefits of leaving the EU can not be assessed in advance of actually leaving the EU, and lies were told on both sides (witness 'emergency budgets', a £ crisis, and rising unemployment - none of which actually happened).

Moreover, all polls continue to reveal a hopelessly split electorate. Anyone who thinks that holding another divisive (and some might say illegitimate) referendum and getting a different result will unite the country is suffering from extraordinary delusion.
