Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

Americans, by a lopsided 72-22 percent margin, say shutting down the government is not the answer.

Would the GOP fare better by refusing to raise the country’s debt ceiling to stop Obamacare? Not much: Americans oppose that approach 64-27 percent.

The survey confirmed what many Republicans have worried about for weeks: Shutting down the government may harm the GOP brand with independents and damage the party’s very real prospects for holding the House and retaking the Senate in the 2014 mid-term elections.

Dear beloved, we gather here today to mourn (or celebrate) the death of the Tea Party Movement. Begun as a direct response to Obama's election, these savages have ensured that they don't get their way and nobody else does either. Also, let us take a moment to remember that they have, in their selfish way, irreparably harmed the Republican party. It will take Republicans years to recover from this. However, I am sure that after they lose the house in 2016, they'll return to their senses. Let us pray that St. Palin and St. Bachman will chime in this discussion and make it all worse for an already moribund Republican party.

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

I hope they keep the government closed through the next election then we'll see how the polls respond on election day. The people can vote to have their government or have it with obamafarce.

CyWanderer Humor Analysis

Wit: 3/10
Style: 3/10
Substance: 6/10
Overall Rating: 4/10

Overall Critique: Somewhat entertaining. I think several of your ideas have merit, however you'll have to forgive me if I don't invite you to eulogize at my funeral. Wit was somewhat lacking in points. You seem to lack confidence in your jokes as you reveal the punchline at the beginning of the eulogy when you say "to mourn (or celebrate)." This takes away some of the uncertainty in the peice and decreases the enjoyment and humor of it. A eulogy is meant to celebrate the life that was, not the death that is. I like your idea in presenting a eulogy here as it creates an interesting conflict between style and message, but I think you would have been better served to posit the dead (the tea party, in this case) in a more positive light to further the contrast between their purpose and their impact. Doing so would have better represented the irony you believe the Tea Party represents, which you believe has caused their own purported demise. I think you could have detailed the relationship between the tea party and republicans more thoroughly to further detail the irony. You could easily have stated that the tea party goal of revolutionizing the republican party was the goal they most aptly succeeded at, doing so in a positive light in accordance with the eulogistic style of the writing. All-in-all, I think you started with a good idea but did not put enough effort into making it truly witty. I would probably recommend a rewrite.

We'll take the Obamacare version with a healthier population and lower healthcare costs, thanks.

Speak for yourself. Not to mention Obamacare achieves none of that.

Too bad Obamacare won't do that...it will hamstring the country though.

Too bad Obamacare won't do that...it will hamstring the country though.

So let's get out in front of it and hamstring the country!

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

The Republicans are digging their own grave. The party has become a complete and utter joke as they have allowed the teabaggers to control the direction of the party. This is no longer "The party of Lincoln" or even "The party of Reagan"....today's GOP is so out on the fringe that there is no longer room for reasonable Republicans, let alone moderates and Independents. To them I say "Welcome to the Democratic Party"...our tent is large enough for you.

There have been 17 government shutdowns....the longest under Clinton. We survived those, now, didn't we?

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

Funny really. I thought it was the Presidents job to act within the budget the House grants him. No budget left? Didn't he see it coming? I would have thought he would slow down the spending, when there was time.

Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

"Shutdown is not the answer"? Of course it is not the bloody answer (whatever the question is) - it is simply what happens when budget negotiations run into a wall.

You can spin it any way you want, but the fact is: the GOP now does contain a (surprisingly influential) minority of politicians who seem to mean what they say and do what they promised - I know, shocking...

Maybe the voters had enough of this "integrity" stuff, and they are about to run in droves back to those who lie to them, manipulate them, and probably laugh at them behind closed door. I am not being sarcastic: perhaps they are; happened before.

But I would rather bet on a very different outcome.

Extremism is bad m'kay...

Hyper extreme labeling, complete with obnoxious name calling is worse....

Beyond that people, there seems to be a lot of liberal progressives (even the ones afraid to call themselves such) with crystal balls, already predicting out beyond 2014, to 2016....I say, keep it up! Though I doubt that when your predictions are proven to be wrong they'll be the same ones at that time saying "I never said that...." What a sad day this is in America.

We've survived bad laws too, now haven't we?

Hell, we got through the F.D. Roosevelt administration, now, didn't we?

Made it through the veritable socialist utopia of the Second New Deal without a government shutdown.

This shutdown is pure, unadulterated faggotry by a bunch of spoiled, whiny bitches.

None of what you said.

Has anything to do with what I said.

If you are for a government shut down.

You are an extremist.

Period.

Congress said yes to the spending. Now they don't want to pay for what has been spent.

You need to get an understanding of US law and the anti-deficiency act.

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

That's not name calling.
LOL....calling conservatives....and "progressives"....that adopt the concept of financial responsibility..."TOTALITARIANS".....is not hyperbolic name calling...at all.

Sure......

wow.

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

That's false, partisan, hyperbole.

Re: Poll: Americans reject GOP shutdown strategy

That's funny.

Cute even.

You actually believe that someone in Congress is interested in federal laws and that this isn't just the Tea Party attempting to poke President Obama in the eye on ACA kickoff day.

Awwww!

Since these Tea Baggers are "men and women of law and principal" I'm sure they won't knuckle under in a couple of days here and come to terms with the Democrats.

LOL

No dude, this was a stunt, pure and simple.

Post up a couple links of individual Tea Partiers being quoted as citing the anti-deficiency act as the reason for this shutdown.

Cuz after all, we're interested in their stated reasons for doing what they're doing, not discussion forum pundits rolling out reason # 3,467 for why they might be doing it.

Show me one Republican that campaigned on shutting down the Government.

The Democrats shutdown the Government by the unwillingness to compromise, and their unwillingness to put forth a budget.
