All right, there are so many threads about presidents and others who supposedly lied (or didn't).

my question for everyone is:

Is a politician, by definition, a liar?

And if so, why do we care when they lie?

IMO, there should be NO politicians in government at all.

So you're an Anarchist then? No politicians means no house or senate, or president for that matter... Not saying that its a bad idea, just wondering how it could be made to work.

Yes, ALL politicians are liars.
They must maintain a level of political correctness in order to acquire and maintain their office. As a result they can not say the truth of their opinions and views.

Regarding Bush, I really don't care if he lied about WMDs in Iraq because that conflict was going to happen anyway.

I said no politicians. I said nothing about getting rid of the government or eliminating any part of it......Although I do think government is too large and needs some cuts.

dude, people that make policy, ie laws, will be called politicians.
I like 'lawmakers' better, although they waste a lot of time doing other stuff sometimes.

I say we eleiminate the depoartment of education. Not doing much good anyways.

It's the other stuff that bothers me.

Hmm.......interesting idea.

But something would need to replace it, with major cuts and less regulations and rules.

oops. I was being sarcastic. If anything, we should flood it with money. Inner cities and all.

I don't agree with this at all, I think the most are honest, most are concerned, but that there is always that dark side that can change any man, woman, or child.

Politicians, IMHO, have all the sincerity of a used car salesman. Of course they lie. Worse yet, we support them while they do it. For the common man, who typically has no opportunity to even speak to an elected official - let alone get anything substancial out of them, spending that money on a prostitute would, at the very least, be orgasmic.

this is the dark side I presume you speak of?

Yup, there's nothing more money can't fix.

that's the american way! No seriosuly, the system needs to be reworked, and we could improve the country drasticially with better funding for education.

But we like wars better.

I think Reagan , ironically, said it best:
"The best politician is no politician"

We could improve the system drastically if kids did more math and science problems. There is no magic bullet. Million dollar teachers and 25 internet connections per classroom can't learn calc for you. Grueling hours of repitition is the only recipe, an unpopular practice it seems.

I'm sure there's some local dogcatcher elected by the good people of South Bum**** who is even more honest than his average constituents. But anyone elected on the state or federal level is certainly a liar.

I disagree with part of your statement.

I, personally, do not think this country likes wars better than educating our children.

I, personally, do not think that more funding would help education.

I do think that the public school system need a major overhall, possibly with some funding cuts.

You probably put it best: "better funding for education".

"Better" does not equal "more". I would prefer to think of "better" as refering to "smarter", as in smart spending of the money.

I think the idea should be to get rid of CAREER polititians. Excepcially career politicians who want to run for president. Wasn't the whole idea that the fathers of our country tried to put in effect is that honest people who are respected by their peers are nominated and elected into the office and not them campaigning for themselves? Just my thoughts, could be wrong.

Interesting that you should say that. Politicians are not necessarily liars but most of them certainly are whores to their own popularity figures.

Then let's start voting to reflect that.

.
Smarter spending would be great. EQUAL spending would be terrific.

You probably put it best: "better funding for education".

"Better" does not equal "more". I would prefer to think of "better" as refering to "smarter", as in smart spending of the money.
Sure better funding would be great too. But to cut spending for education when achievement is so low, is just dumb.

I put "other."

Politicians lie - most of them anyway. Some do it because they want to.

But some do it because they have to.

What would you do if someone got up on stage and said, "Our education is not a total debacle, and I intend to waste no more money, time, focus or manpower on it for the next four years" at a debate?

Especially if his opposition were running on a platform of "Save America's Future!" and other such tag-lines?

You'd vote the guy who says "It ain't broke" right out of a job, even though it's true.

So... Sometimes they lie because they want to; but sometimes they lie because we make them. And none of them lie 100% of the time.
