Hi Everyone, Iv been struggling with this question for what seems like the longest time. I myself voted for trump in 2016 after being swept up in the us vs them mentality of party politics. Unfortunately now I realize that my party has stopped resembling the republican party I originally joined. I had no idea that trump would have this much of a transformative effect on the party! What happened to my fellow deficit hawks, paleo and fiscal conservatives, civil liberty promoters, constitution lovers, free trade and free market thinkers, individual liberty and limited government types? Has the need to defeat the other side caused republicans to abandon their principals or is this just the final effect of what neocons and bush did to the party. Unfortunately I don't think I can stay a republican in the current state the party is in. My question is should I join others like Justin Amash and leave, stay and fight it out like Romney, convert like Rand Paul, or become a blue dog democrat? I would appreciate answers from all sides, please convince me! I am currently a moderate like Eisenhower but I lean libertarian because I value civil liberties sound fiscal policies, I wouldn't support going after your social security or do nothing about the environment. Lastly as someone in the military, I think we need to end the wars pursue a less interventionist foreign policy, I wouldn't be against cutting defense spending and getting rid of the patriot act, but balancing the budget not tax cuts are my priority.

This is what I think republicans have become:

I gave up on the Republican party in 2012 after 38 years as a member. It's become as spendthrift and authoritarian as the Democrats; they just blow tax payer money on different things than the Democrats.

Now I'm an independent with Libertarian leanings. Don't feel you have to "pick a team" or "pick a side". Just support what you think is best for the nation and go from there.

Stop being a herd beast. Think for yourself. Make up your own mind.

In other words...leave the Republican Party and don't even think about joining any other Party. You don't need them.

When was the last time the R party resembled anything you thought it was?
Maybe Reagan?
Yet he grew the debt a whopping 186%. I think that is the most of any non war time prez.

In other words, the prez many R's claim as the greatest R modern prez, was the worst at spending and budget.

I haven't belonged to either party in decades.
I realized along time ago, each party really does the same stuff in actions. Just the words they use are different. But if one looks deep and at actions, you'll see both really do much of the same.
And it's not to benefit WE THE PEOPLE. But to benefit they the politicians. At the expense of WE THE PEOPLE.

Take a simple topic like Congress pay. How do they get their pay raises?

And over the last 30 or more years, each party is moving further to the extremes. Leaving middle Americans with no home or representation.
Which now amount to almost as much as each party claims as partisans.

I try to vote opposite of the party in power, just to keep the fringe partisans from running rampant BS down our throats.

thanks for your reply it seems that most republicans like me have just become independents especially after the last election according to polls. Well I guess I may have to join them as well, at least until the republican party is fixed or moderates take back the democrat party from the socialists and progressives.

One could maybe once say that the parties were badicalky the same, but with the GOP now made in thebimage of an authoritarian demagogue, that case can no longer be made.

If you ever want the GOP to back to what it was you probably need to vote Democratic, while you can still vote at all.

Say what you will about "free spending Democrats", they have been much better at keeping down the deficit than the "tight-fisted" Republicans.

good point, but at least with Reagan the philosophy and principals of the party were right even Reagan admitted he failed in cutting spending. I don't know what the philosophy of the new party is but I don't like it.

You should join the Green Party.

Im also surprised how quickly the party changed for all the talk of the never trumpers, they don't exist at all except maybe Romney and fox news and talk radio have just become the trump propaganda machine.

It's hard to believe anything you say when you're considering joining the current Dem party even after posting your beliefs.

In what way would Democrats represent you on fiscal responsibility, individual liberty, limited government and balancing the budget?

Seriously?

Register any way you like, but not voting Democratic is essentially a vote for authoritarianism.

The fact that Democrats can't agree with each other while Republicans fall in lock step should be considered an attractive feature.

I agree but that's why I said Id concider becoming a blue dog democrat in the party. It seems after the midterms blue dog democrats have risen in the party which is more then moderate republicans and libertarians which are dying out!

Seriously.

Many of the GOP Elites felt so threatened by Trump back in 2016 that they would have rather Crooked Hillary win than Trump.

There's a reason some people call the Reps and Dems the "UniParty".

I feel your pain. I left the party during the GW Bush years and things have only got worse since then. Of the options you laid out, I'd say going Democrat is the least viable with the ideology you laid out. Democrats, when in power, have usually followed the same interventionist policies as the Republicans. And as the party moves further and further left, the idea of fiscal responsibility is going out the window. We now have mainstream Democrat candidates for the Presidency suggesting things like free college and Medicare for all.

So the question comes down to stay or leave? Honestly, I think a little of both. Don't be afraid to vote third party when the Republicans trot out awful big government, neoconservative candidates. If enough libertarian/fiscal conservative minded folks stop voting for any slob with an R next to their name, the party might wake up, take notice that they cannot take those votes for granted anymore and do something to actually earn them. But you can stay involved in the party via primaries/caucuses and such things. I consider myself a independent, but I vote in the Republican primaries to try and influence the party that still at least occasionally pays my viewpoint some lip service. I know the Democrats have nothing to offer, sadly.

this chart is exactly why im considering that the democrat party is overall better. As long as socialists like Bernie are vanquished it could become the party of moderates with blue dog democrats having more influence as more libertarians abandon the republican party

Lots of people call themselves independents and then vote straight ticket Republican.

They’re Republicans who are just too cowardly to admit it.

The Republican Party was always like this. They’ve just stopped hiding it.

I joined the Republican Party in 1980. Never voted for anyone who was not a Republican in my entire life, until November of 2016, when I voted for every Republican on my ballot except Trump (I voted for Johnson).

After watching the complete and total destruction of the once great Republican Party since Trump was elected, I too am homeless. But I do think I'm going to vote complete Democratic ticket in November. The Republican Party will never come back to its once great pre-Trump self until it is completely destroyed and rebuilds from the inside out.

"The Republican Party was always like this. They’ve just stopped hiding it. "

You could be right but if the democrat party moves further left it will become just as broken as the republican party is now.

This is exactly what Iv been thinking of doing I want the party back and this may be the only way to reform it.

Are you deliberately pretending to not understand what I wrote?

What part of "GOP Elites" do you not understand?

Never mind...I don't care if you understand or not.

You are dismissed. (see my sig)
