A lady who has a deep interest in American history made me aware of a site which provides party platforms from earlier years. Going back to 1880, here's two sections from one of them:

"2. The Constitution of the United States is a supreme law, and not a mere contract. Out of confederated States it made a sovereign nation. Some powers are denied to the Nation, while others are denied to the States; but the boundary between the powers delegated and those reserved is to be determined by the National and not by the State tribunal.

"3. The work of popular education is one left to the care of the several States, but it is the duty of the National Government to aid that work to the extent of its constitutional power. The intelligence of the Nation is but the aggregate of the intelligence in the several States, and the destiny of the Nation must be guided, not by the genius of any one State, but by the aggregate genius of all."

The positions taken are not unfamiliar even at this remove of 142 years. I'm sure you know which party approved them as part of its platform. You can confirm this through a search engine, entering the words 'political party platform' and the number '1880'.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

The only consistency in the political parties is that the oppose each other.

Hi, Crovax!

I submit that the quoted statement does not necessarily work with regard to some legislation. Mutual back-scratching can produce nearly unanimous consent. On the macro scale, though, it holds true.

Additional thought.

Reading Alexis de Tocqueville, it seems that some of the beliefs and prejudices of specific areas of these United States of America have remained surprisingly consistent with time. This adds another dimension to the slings and arrows, [Ed.: Not to mention rotten eggs and dead cats,] slung by one party at t'other.

Regards, stay safe 'n well.

America does not have political parties. you have independents who flock under an umbrella name for either side.
