Holding placards that read, "You have blood on your hands" and "This is War," protesters rallied near the house of Polish conservative leader Jaroslaw Kaczynski. A court previously banned almost all grounds for abortion.
Thousands of protesters across Poland took to the streets on Friday to vent their anger after a top court banned almost all grounds for abortion. In the Thursday ruling, the Constitutional Tribunal prohibited terminations due to fetal defects, ending the most common of the few legal grounds for abortion in Poland and setting the country further apart from its European Union counterparts. Many of protesters who gathered in cities throughout Poland wore protective masks while defying a coronavirus-related ban on gatherings.

Protesters and police clash in Wroclaw (Breslau) after a tightening of the abortion laws in Poland

The right-wing Polish government has been warned by the European Union that politicizing the judiciary is not in keeping with EU values and is bound to lead to civil rights tensions. Poland has received generous aid from the EU in order to help it overcome decades of authoritarian rule under the Communists and beglect of infrastructure. We have lately seen municipalities there pass regulations against gays and now this withdrawal of women's rights to abortion. It is not as though the Polish people did not see this coming with the forced resignation of liberal judges by the conservative nationalist government. Now Poles are taking to the streets to put a halt on this regression to authoritarianism which we hoped had been banished with Poland's accession to the EU.
