HOMESTEAD, Pa. -- A group of police officers in the Pittsburgh area picked up the bill for a man and woman at a diner after the couple made it clear they didn't want to sit near them.

"A table goes to sit down and the guy looks over at one of the police officers and was like, 'Nah I don't want to sit here.' So they got moved completely opposite, away from the police officers," said Eat N' Park server Jesse Meyers.

"I looked over and said, 'It's okay sir. You won't have to worry about it, we won't hurt you," said Officer Thomas. "He looked at me hard again and said he's not sitting here and walked away."

"I finished my meal and Officer Strang thought well, 'we should pay his tab,'" said Thomas.

And that's exactly what he did. Officer Thomas paid for the couple's dinner and wrote this message on the check, "Sir, your check was paid for by the police officers that you didn't want to sit next to. Thank you for your support."

Officer Thomas also left the couple's server a $10 tip.

Maybe they didn't want to be potential targets, due to proximity?

Who knows?

Too bad the restaurant didn't tell the couple to leave. Had I heard that, no doubt in my mind I would have made a scene" Jerks.

it was the cop who was a jerk

the other patrons dealt with the staff to have their needs met

it was the cop who had to make a snide remark to the other patrons

You left out the last bit of the article. I'm sure it was an over site. It also wasn't racial as the cops were mixed. They look like they eat there regularly. Anyway good for them. They weren't belligerent which I'm sure no one would begrudge but they also didn't ignore the situation either. The couple got a lesson that not all (or most for that matter) cops are assholes. They got a free meal and yes got put on the spot a little bit. Tough noogies.

"Essentially the whole goal of it was to let him know that we're not here to hurt you, we're not here for that," said Thomas. "We're here for you. We work for the public. And we just want to better the relationship between the community and the police."

The officers said they got a smile and a thank you from the couple as they left.

I have paid for quite a few cops meals over the years.
Bought/treated soldiers to meals and/or drinks too...

Could you imagine what would have happened if the couple picked up a knife to cut some meat? The police may have feared for their lives and opened fire!

You think he's a jerk for being offended that people didn't want to even sit next to him for being a cop?

Do you read the stuff you post before hitting Post? Try reading it out loud next time you want to say something off the wall. I know You can do better than that.

most of them appreciate it. a few years ago I was in an airport-and a lady NCO was in the same shop. we started talking in line and she was on her way to Afghanistan. She had a couple candy bars and a couple bottles of water and when I went up to the clerk I said I got her stuff too. It was only a few dollars but the big smile I got from both the clerk and the Sgt was worth far more than the five bucks I paid.

Agreed...

no, read what i actually posted
the cop can choose to be offended, as can we all, over anything, no matter how inconsequential ... like who sits near you

that people didn't want to even sit next to him for being a cop?
they are restaurant patrons. they get to choose where they are seated unless the restaurant has a different policy
and they chose somewhere not near the cops who were already seated

and that was probably a good thing
because the cop taunted the patrons as they were being seated
he escalated the confrontation
THAT is why he was the jerk

as i said, given his inclination to start some ****, not being seated near him was probably a very good outcome

Edit...I think of your name if Botsteva. Don't ask me why. So Bodi is a living nickname. JFYI.

From July 14, 2016:
The president, who was raised by a single mother, said he too had experienced racial prejudice over the years. He shared a story about a white woman refusing to ride an elevator with him when he was growing up in Hawaii..

President Obama Urges Police, Communities to Come Together During Town Hall: 'It's Not Us Versus Them' - ABC News
A similar situation happened to our president, and he's still talking about it 40 years later.

Notice the police officer used the situation to perform an act of kindness, after initially being insulted. Obama uses his moments of perceived prejudice to brow beat us.

One time back in my cop days I was in the drive thru, I had already ordered and was waiting behind a vehicle. When it was my turn up to the window to pay and get my food I was informed that the customers ahead of me paid for my meal. I tried to pay for my meal anyways but the drive thru people wouldn't accept my money.

Sometimes people are really nice to police. And it is encouraging

Hey, she's heading out for us - it's the least we can do. I woulda' done the same. Good work!

Your hatred of LEOs is pathetic. If it was a table full of black patrons this couple was trying to avoid they'd be called the biggest pieces of ****. But since it was LEOs they wanted to avoid it's ok.

I actually don't appreciate people paying for my meal without asking me first.

i believe it is telling that you find an opportunity to criticize blacks despite that this thread/situation previously had no racial element

to your premise; it is wise to keep hostile parties separate, no matter what animus causes them to be hostile toward each other

in the described instance, the patrons who chose not to be seated by the cops acted appropriately in their interaction with the restaurant staff
the only party displaying inappropriate behavior was the cop, who attempted to taunt the other arriving patrons

the cop was a dick
the cop does not get an exemption from being called out as a dick only because he is a cop

When I was dating my now ex-wife she worked the closing shift as a server at a newly opened restaurant in downtown Phoenix. It wasn't in a bad neighborhood, but it was downtown in a big city. The two young guys who owned it were very full of themselves. They never openly said or did anything to cops to make them feel unwelcome, but they would do passive-aggressive things to get them to go away quicker than they might otherwise. Sometimes I would be there waiting for the now-ex to get off and would overhear them talk about it. They hoped that if the cops felt hostility they would stop coming in altogether.

They were freakin' idiots.

I eventually graduated and moved away. I have no idea whatever happened to these two guys or their restaurant.
