PLease DON'T fall for phony Beto!

I respectfully disagree. I was very impressed when I saw the O'Rourke answer regarding the NFL players taking a knee controversy. He did not dodge or weave or try to move the goal posts. He gave a firm answer and supported their right when the easy thing to do in Texas would be to wave the flag and demand others salute.

I am 69 and have lived long enough to remember the JFK campaign which first interested me when I was in the sixth grade. And in 68 I campaigned for Bobby. O'Rourke reminds me of that character both had - a youthful charisma that made you want to believe its an American in something bigger than just your own self interests.

You cannot manufacture that. You cannot create that. You cannot script that. Its something few have and Beto has it.

And right now the country needs it in spades.

Thought y'all didn't like old white dudes.

He has the gift Obama had, charisma, enough to fool you he's on your side, but he took the big oil money when it really came down to it. The guy will turn out to be a lot more centrist and ineffwectual like Obama. I wanna see someone with fight, like Warren (I expect her to fill the VP ticket, I am pretty sure it will be her or another woman), or Bernie, with rel progressive values. Going "GOP Lite" is not gonna win this for us and that's what Beto will be in the end.

Even though he's not as progressive as I'd like, a guy like Richard Ojeda excites me a lot more than Beto, and I think will have broader appeal.

He also has a criminal record. If he became president, he would have to be impeached, immediately.

I agree. And the contrast between this sincere youthful energy and Trump's hateful aging presence would be stark. No way O'Rourke could lose to Trump. This guy almost beat Ted Cruz in Texas. He would have real chance to take Texas and sink Trump in a landslide.

Well you won't like our Governor, Jay Inslee, but there's one.

I think in general, governors are better prepared to be president, but that doesnt mean every governor will make a good president.

Glad to see that great minds think alike.

I like Ojeda and how he carries himself. A debate between Ojeda and Trump would be fun to watch. Also, some of the things people like in Trump are supposedly that he is a straight talker, unapologetic, and tough. I think those are arguable, but it is popular opinion among his base. Well, Ojeda has those traits also. It would be interesting.

Damn straight.

C'mon, Commander Bonespurs vs a 24 year career soldier that served with airborne sappers in active war zones, discharging with a rank of Major. Who wouldn't pay to see that?

That is a well done political ad.

I also am seeing some discontent expressed by progressives that Biden is sort of being pushed as the "one" who can beat Trump. Feinstein said so yesterday about him being the savior or something like that. I think while its a certain improvement, there are risks. First being, what happens to the democratic platform if all the right leaning NeverTrumpers come over? Certainly they want a Beto or Biden. Not an Ojeda or Gabbard or Harris. So that does pull the party further right. That is certain to grow anger from the progressive wing. Second, I saw yesterday a Politico article that mocked Alexandria Ocasio Cortez and said "she has lost everything so far since the establishment wall is crushing her." It makes it out to be this Pelosi vs progressive thing. All I have to say is if the anger and populism is still there in 2020, all bets are off. People wont want the establishment again.

Beto is a fresh face that establishment "swamp" corporate democrats have pegged as "the new Obama". Perhaps he has the charisma to win, and while literallly almost anything would be an improvement over Trump, Beto is an empty suit, one of the WORST choices America could make.

I'm not hot on Biden, just basically more Obama, but I find even him more preferable. Beto is a fresh face that is able to raise money, there is no substance, no dept, no real experience. I really hope we stop hearing his name soon. I think if we don't, we'll all regret it.

A candidate with an RFK vibe who can drum up copious small dollar donations, excites young people and much of the old Obama coalition, can be competitive in red states even while checking most of the key Dem checkboxes, offers an upbeat and inclusive message, and is articulate on the stump and in debates? I'm going to guess that if he runs he's going to do pretty well in the primaries.

Oh I agree as well. If he runs, Beto will win no doubt. He has that Bill Clinton/Obama likeability. However, consider what happened under both of those leaders. The dem party shifted right. Now if you are a moderate or not a Trump fan republican thats great news. But if you are a progressive or a millennial you might not be happy. Because both of those presidents lost a lot of seats in Congress and throughout the states when they were leaders. The progressive agenda was sidelined. Its a sort of short term gain but a huge long term loss. I guess what I am trying to say is whether you like Beto or not depends on where you sit on the political spectrum. If politics like this continue, moderates and blue dogs could take over the democratic party.

What's Beto's great sin supposed to be?

No way Trump can beat Beto because Beto almost beat Cruz.

But Trump trounced Cruz in a national election.

Sad that female democrats vote based on who they think is cute. Talk about shallow and sexist.

I have seen the photos of female Trumpkins who had shirts with an arrow point down and asked Trump to grab them between the legs. Sad also.

Well as I understand it progressives dont like his voting record. He votes too often with Trump and the GOP. He also takes a lot of PAC money from the oil and gas industries. Now as I said if you are a moderate or republican thats not a bad thing. But progressives hate that. They would likely prefer a Warren or Sanders or Ojeda.

As much as I am tempted to stoke the fires of anger between Democrats by whispering poison in your ears about the flaws of each of your candidates, and then sit back smiling as you fight amongst one another, I have been given no reason to believe O'Rourke is an "empty suit" as you call him. He is not a doctrinaire Democratic Socialist like Bernie Sanders, but he does not pretend to be one. I have no vast reservoirs of bile saved for the man other than he does not stand for my values as a conservative and I will not vote for him. But I will not slander the man as being some kind of glad-handing politician devoid of any bedrock principles save self-interest.

Its not just democrats. Lots of right leaning women like him too.

Don't right-leaning women vote based on what their husbands tell them to say??

Exactly it would be difficult for most conservatives to dislike Beto. He in theory is a republican from yesteryear. He says things that Reagan might have said. He isnt offensive. But how does he get things done with Ocasio Cortez? Does she battle everything he does? Does the Progressive wing stir flames? It seems recently both parties are so busy infighting.

The only thing I can imagine that could sideline Beto is if Castro runs. Its conceivable they cancel each other out and someone else wins TX. Also if Kamala runs, she will get CA and their primary is early enough to do damage. Beto could potentially end up like Sanders and get the heartland and smaller states but lose the big ones like CA, NY and FL if others like Booker, Gillibrand and Harris step in. There always is the risk of damage with so many running and home state popularity.

Progressives in 2020 will be the equal of the really hot girl in high school with a smoking body who married the good looking quarterback who turned out to be a complete buttwipe who absused her badly. Ten years later, she is more than happy to marry the older, balding chubby CPA who treats her like a queen and worships the ground she walks on even though in bed she fantasizes about film stars.

Trump is the years of abuse and almost anything will look comparatively good after him. Or to put it another way - half a loaf of bread is better than none.

Agree anybody should be able to beat Trump. But it could do long term damage. Nobody was going to vote for another republican after GW but it didnt take long for them to start winning again. Politics is a yo yo and voters have short memories.
