Planned Parenthood clinics to help register voters [W:217]

Register to vote while killing an unborn child!

Yes, that's a thing you could do.

I mean it's not like the voter registration is a part of the equation for someone like you.

btw, where does this group get 20 million to donate to the Democrats?

There are seperate legal entities. There is the Planned Parenthood non-profit medical organization and there is the seperate Planned Parenthood Action Fund which is a SuperPAC. The medical non-profit can't make political donations and maintain it's non-profit status. The Planned Parenthood PAC is allowed to make political donation and it raises it's own funds.

Similar to the National Rifle Association (non-profit arm) and the NRA Political Victory Fund. A non-profit wing and a PAC wing.

Seems that the dishonest attacks on Planned Parenthood are coming back to bite the attackers, right in the ass. Good!!

Article is here.

I'd prefer they don't stick their feet in voter anything - they're not an unbiased 3rd party.

Isn't some of their reasoning outdated, though?

Those same groups are also more likely to be affected by stricter voting laws around the country, such as new ID mandates.

Didn't the SCOTUS strike this down as being unconstitutional?

They (indirectly) struck down a preclearance requirement for states with a *cough* history of such a thing. It's still against the law to draw districts in such a fashion, but now we have to wait until after the fact to challenge the districts.

Way to go, SCOTUS.

Yep, lots of minority babies being aborted at disproportionate rates. Margaret Sanger would certainly be proud.

Come now. White women use Planned Parenthood, too. Moreover, per abortion statistics from Guttmacher Institute, white women made up the majority of women who had abortions in 2014 (34%). Now, whether or not they had those abortions at a Planned Parenthood clinic is debatable. But linking Black women to Planned Parenthood simply because they tend to use this agency moreso than White women to resolve their feminine health issues is rather unfair and very misleading in the grand scheme of things. After all, it's not like Black women use Planned Parenthood exclusively. They just use them moreso than Whites and there are two fundamental reasons for this:

1) Income. Black women tend to be of low-income and, therefore, can't afford to go to a private clinic for their healthcare needs, especially where abortions are concerned.

2) Marriage. Because most Black women who have abortions live in urban areas where poverty is prevalent, most of these women aren't married and, as such, are more likely to abort their fetus because they don't want to raise a child out of wedlock as opposed to White women who do tend to marry more often. But even if they don't, most White women within the age group most likely to have an abortion (25-40) are more financially well-off than minorities, Black women in particular.

When you look beyond the numbers of one abortion entity, the truth reveals itself. Folks need to stop using Planned Parenthood as their moral, political scapegoat especially since statistically, abortions make up only 3% of their total services rendered.

Yeah, how terrible of them to strike down a part of a law that treated states unequally.

But Planned Parenthood does a lot more than abortions....abortion services are a tiny part of the services the perform.

Three percent of their business amounts to how many abortions again? It's might sound nice to say, well, it's only a small part of their business, but you should probably pay attention to how many abortions that equals.

Why wouldn't it be? Planned Parenthood is a non-profit entity. As such, they can solicit volunteers to conduct administrative services til the cows come home.

Specifically, because it's a non-profit that receives tax payer funded subsidies.

Registering people to vote? Of course. If they ask what their party affiliation is before providing the registration material then we might have a problem.

You're right. They would have a problem since it's illegal to ask anyone what their party affiliation is when they register to vote. You don't make that known until you get your ballot at the voting booth. There's nothing on your voter registration card that identifies your party affiliation.

So, if you were trying to be sarcastic...Epic :failpail: ....Try again.

But if you were just confirming the voter registration process...carry on.:2wave:

So is your local health department and they register voters every day.

Aw, you're just wishing ACORN were involved and not some little old lady who reminds you of grandma. :crazy3::ssst:

The local health department has a political agenda? And don't say that Planned Parenthood doesn't have an agenda. There's lots of money to be lost if Planned Parenthood loses its government subsidy.

Specifically, because it's a non-profit that receives tax payer funded subsidies.

Well, they could do it of their own accord or do it because they are federally subsidized. It really doesn't matter what they use as justification. The fact is they're a non-profit (or not-for-profit) group who can choose to register voters on a volunteer basis as they choose.

Now, are they doing this as a slap in the face to the Republican Party? Maybe...

It would serve them right, though. They should've planned nice instead of trying to under cut them.

Throw enough shade and somebody's bound to pull back that branch and either expose you to the sun or slap you in the face with it.

Yeah, how terrible of them to strike down a part of a law that treated states unequally.

It's not my fault certain states have a history of blatant racial voter suppression.

The local health department has a political agenda?

No, but they are required by law to ask every patient they service if they'd like to register to vote.

And don't say that Planned Parenthood doesn't have an agenda. There's lots of money to be lost if Planned Parenthood loses its government subsidy.

I wouldn't say it's an agenda as much as it's....say...payback.

As for the government subsidy, as long as they're seeing Medicaid patients they'll get a cut of the taxpayer pie. Less than Exxon/Mobile, perhaps, but still their share.

Payback, agenda. Same difference. That is illegal.

Very well...

What law prohibits Planned Parenthood from doing this?

Again, they are a non-profit organization. They can solicit volunteers to perform non-skilled, administrative services as they please. But I'll wait for you to provide that portion of the law which prohibits them from providing volunteer voter registration services. And if you can demonstrate such, I'll apologize on the spot.

The NRA can register people to vote. Is this so different?

I mean is registering to vote a bad thing ever - if done legally?

How are they fighting? What fight are they fighting?

They fight for bodily autonomy for women and girls. Do you support that or not?

Nope this is why I support this and think its a good thing.

At most this is a symbolic gesture. It won't result in huge numbers of votes so that "right in the ass" statement is a little over the top. I don't see why they haven't been doing this all along.
