This has absolutely nothing to do with politics, but I was wandering through the internet today and found it to be pretty fascinating. The key points are:

The Piri Reis map shows the western coast of Africa, the eastern coast of South America, and the northern coast of Antarctica. The northern coastline of Antarctica is perfectly detailed. The most puzzling however is not so much how Piri Reis managed to draw such an accurate map of the Antarctic region 300 years before it was discovered, but that the map shows the coastline under the ice. Geological evidence confirms that the latest date Queen Maud Land could have been charted in an ice-free state is 4000 BC.

The article is rather in depth if anyone wants to read more on it. So what do y'all think? Anyone know or know of an explanation?

I think the most likely explanation is that there were civilizations prior to the ones we know about today.

That's a big prior. We're talking a civilization in 4000 BC that had the technology to accurately map the world.

Yes, it's a big prior. But if we know (as we appear to) that it could not have been mapped without satellite imagery before 4,000 B.C., then we must either conclude that the accurate coastline is a coincidence, or that someone had the ability to map it at that time.

That is not acceptable. I want to know more.

I would like to know more as well. I'm a glutton for knowledge.

But why is this not acceptable? It seems quite logical to me.

I suppose we could question whether the science that suggests 4000 B.C. as the latest ice-free date for Queen Maude Land is accurate, but I think the science is based on ice-core data and it's pretty solid.

That leaves only two options, as mentioned above--either it's a coincidence (someone could probably figure the odds based on angles, line segments, etc. but I'd imagine they'd be pretty astronomical), or someone had the ability to map it prior to it's being covered in ice. This is the most likely explanation.

The fact that it flies in the face of conventional wisdom regarding archaeology and history is no defense being that historical and archaeological knowledge is relatively fallible. There are quite a large number of anomalous observations that get filed away and never examined in both fields.

It's not unnacceptable because it's unreasonable; it seems to be a perfectly realistic explanation. It's unacceptable because I want to know more. It's like the mystery of Roanoke. It kills me that it will never be solved.

Pfft.

Did it ever occur to any of you that the aliens that built the Pyramids drew this map? Or that God simply predated it like the dinosaur bones?

Problem solved.

You are not invited to this thread, dear. I already tried to share my excitement on the subject with you last night and was brutally shot down. I'm still recovering, it will be a long road.

...when are you coming home again?

There is a book that was published not too long ago called "1421: The Year China Discovered the World" (however, the US edition was titled "1421: The Year China Discovered America"). It was written by Gavin Menzies, a former submariner.

He argues that during the Ming dynasty, there were these massive treasure fleets that sailed around the world. These ships were much larger than the ones Columbus sailed to America with. This fleet was commanded by a man name Zheng He, he was a Eunich serving as a chinese Admiral. He is also a muslim and was originally from Arabia.

Anyways.....In the book, there are maps drawn by the Chinese cartographers that traveled on this fleet of treasure ships. The goal of this fleet was to show the entire world the might of the chinese navy. This would legitimize chinese authority over other nations, which can lead to tributary rewards. These maps were drawn in 1421 and it is quite possible that some of these maps have been shared to other peoples of the world via trade. China at the time was the most developed nation and had the most vast trading networks, so it is likely. However, at around the time of the fleets return, the dynasty had changed it stance on its navy. The emperor had died, and was replaced by his son, who do not share his vision of world domination. He was more concerned with domestic affairs. This led to a book burning, which burned much of the discoveries of Zheng He's fleet.

But it is still quite possible that some of these maps have been distributed before its destruction.

However, I must admit, Gavin Menzies does stretch his hypothesis a little too much at times. And at best is just a conspiracy theory. It still warrants a good reading because it's quite a different perspective to take.

Oh and yes, I did forget to mention about the mapping of Antartica. The Chinese also mapped the west coast of Africa, all of Australia, Anartica, Greenland and many others coast lines before the major discoverers like Magellan and Columbus.

The chinese had found a star that was similar to Polaris to navigate the waters below the equator. It's very important to note that it is impossible to navigate longitude if you did not have a star to calculate your distance by. Polaris, or the North Star, can only be visible in the northern hemisphere. The chinese found a similar star in the southern hemisphere and used that to navigate to Australia, South America, and even Antartica.

Yeah, but we're talking 4000 BC here. Not only 4000 BC, but a civilization who was advanced enough to create maps we can now only make with satellite technology.

Aliens! :rofl Obviously aliens created humans and thus those closest to our creation had all kinds of knowledge that we now lack. I wonder why the aliens abandoned us? Angry aliens sure explains the OT much better than an "all loving god" does.

Maybe they somehow forcasted how we would turn out? I'd abandon us too if I knew Paris Hilton were on the way.

Maybe it takes a long time to get from heaven to here and the planets have to be lined up just soooooooo.

Perhaps it is the claim that it can only have been charted in 4000 BC that is in suspect. As well as the claim that it could only have been charted by satellite.

Perhaps there was a method to make more accurate maps that we are not thinking of, or even aware of. People used to make magnetic compasses out of magnatized metal, a bowl of water, some string, and a drop of oil. It wouldn't be surpising to learn that there was a method into cartography that doesn't rely on our advanced technology.

The 4000 BC isn't under much contest. It's based off of massive amounts of geological evidence through many different tests.

As far as the mapping, there could certainly be a method that gives such accurate results without a satellite. That doesn't change the fact that they would have had to invented it in 4000 BC.

Just more evidence that Tom Cruise is the Jesus of Scientology. I bet they could come up with an answer for you Kelzie. They know alot of stuff you'd never even figure out on your own.

Didn't you hear that Tom Cruise is the new Jesus Christ? I'm just waiting for him to be strung up on a cross.

It wouldn't take much wood either. About 6 feet high should do the trick.

I know. Paris suc....oh wait. You said Paris "Hilton." Carry on.
