Stephen Hawking Baffled by Support for Trump

Renowned theoretical physicist Stephen Hawking may have a good grasp on the workings of the universe, but he says he can't understand Donald Trump's popularity.
Hawkings tells ITV's "Good Morning Britain" show that he has no explanation for the success of the presumptive Republican Party presidential nominee.

So, the man who was once called "the smartest man alive" is even stumped by what people are thinking when it comes to this demagogue nominee.
He is spot on when he says that Trump seems to appeal to the lowest common denominator.
Trump really is the South Park of politics.

Um, he's a physicist and a cosmologist. He probably also doesn't understand how to do a parallel turn on Ajax Mountain in Aspen with two different size and shape skis, either. Does that mean he isn't really the smartest man in the world?

I think the point he's trying to make is that he doesn't really understand how this many people can be this stupid. However, seeing the list of average Trump supporters on this board I'd say he just doesn't spend enough time browsing the internet. Half the guys who support Trump on this forum are some of the most regularly exposed for saying outright stupid ****. The other half are outright little racist trolls complaining about how terrible white men have it in this day and age.

I would say that the overwhelming majority of Trump supporters on this board are dizzyingly xenophobic.

They make me think of a dialogue from Sherlock:

Mycroft Holmes: "Our way of life is under threat from an invisible enemy, one that hovers at our elbow on a daily basis. These enemies are everywhere, undetected and unstoppable."
Doctor Watson: "Socialists?"
Mycroft Holmes: "Not Socialists, Doctor, no."
Doctor Watson: "Anarchists?"
Mycroft Holmes: "No."
Doctor Watson: "The French? The Suffragists?"
Mycroft Holmes: "Is there any large body of people you're not concerned about?"

That wasn't sarcasm (I know its hard to tell with me). I was really just saying that Trump is so far out there that the smartest man in the world has trouble figuring him out...
Trump is the phenomenon here. I'm not questioning Hawking's intellect.

I also don't know how people can be dumb enough to support Trump.

You mean the guy who never had to work a day in his life and has never run a business can't understand why Trump is so popular with those who do? Quelle surprise.

Yeah, I mean scientists and engineers never have to work a day in their lives. Such a posh existence.

... Stephen ... Hawking... has never had to work a day in his life? Lol... Do you know who Stephen Hawking is?

Yeah. Those mathematic professors and teachers out there have it cozy. No real work there.
And you know, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, is a walk in the park. He probably contracted the disease on purpose to go on welfare...oh wait. He didn't go on welfare and the UK has even used him as an example for inspiring the handicapped to work and find careers.
That lazy bastard!

Now, this was sarcasm. ;)

They aren't dumb. They are frustrated. Ever look at Trump's favorability ratings? They are in the gutter along with Hillary's. I don't think conservatives care who the president is as long as they think he or she might actually fix something. I'm no fan of Trump either but I certainly understand why he is popular. It couldn't be more obvious. What I don't understand is how people like Hawking can buy into the concept of "dark matter." That's why he is a physicist and I am not.

Yes, I do. Do you? In fact his ALS caused him to be mostly supported by the state before he graduated Oxford. He has never run a business of any kind.

Lmao, no no - you don't get to slink away that easy. You said he has never had to work a day in his life. That's simply false. You're welcome to retract it whenever you want.

He's confused by human nature because it can't be explained by math and physics.

With all due respect to Stephen Hawking, who really gives a flying **** what he thinks about politics. Maybe Hawking should have been asked about the left's need for "celebrity" endorsements before they can make up there own minds about anything.

Given his esteemed place in his profession, he probably doesn't converse with the average person often enough to realize that they can easily be this stupid and/or reactionary.

No one is trying to "slink away", that's your usual silly characterization. What I said was entirely accurate - he never had to work a day in his life. He has done some work, but it has been work entirely of his choosing. He has never owned or run a business. I doubt he has clue one of how to.

Smartness or dumbness doesn't enter into the equation of a favorable politician's ratings. A politician (or pundit or fan) might be the smartest in the room but if they wish to, for example, defend the world, hike tax rates to their highest levels to give the people more or provide any combination in between their IQs drop precipitately.

For me, the smartest politician is the one who concerns themselves with the health and welfare of the country. The politician who strictly attempts to fulfill their ideology is a terrible politician no matter their IQ. Same for judges. Judges' IQs drop precipitately when they strictly attempt to fulfill their ideology.

I don't know about that.....

I take Sarah Palin for an example. She says some really inflammatory and incredibly stupid things. Regardless of her actual intellectual capacity (which I don't peg too high, but who knows), she ended up jettisoning most of her supporters.

Because if she isn't a complete ****ing dumb***, she plays one too well to maintain serious support....

Lmao, good grief, every job is entirely of your choosing unless you are a slave. Stephen Hawking has literally worked in his field of study his entire professional life. Your post contradicts itself.

look at all the people supporting Hillary. dumb (trump) and dumber(Clinton) in this case.
didn't vote for trump in the primary, but if he gets it I will vote for him
in the general against Hillary for sure.

Yes, Stephen Hawking has never worked a day in his life. He became the world's most famous theoretical physicist, cosmologist, author of multiple books and earned the Presidential Medal Freedom, the highest award a civilian can receive, by never working a day in his life. He is an inspiration to us all in the knowledge that if we binge-watch enough Breaking Bad and Mad Men episodes, we too might earn such accolades.

Your post is particularly stupid in that you feel adding "had to" and "of his choosing" somehow strengthens your point, as if Trump "had to" work a day in his life (he didn't) and didn't choose to be a business scam artist of his own volition (he did).
