This is BIG news for the future of our Postal Service.

Last year, ex-President Trump's hand-picked Postmaster General Louis DeJoy repeatedly made headlines for trying to bring the Postal Service to a grinding halt. He became a pawn in Trump's scheme to undermine vote-by-mail by sabotaging the USPS.

But now, President Biden has nominated three individuals to serve on the USPS Board of Governors. And if these nominees are approved by the Senate -- the Board will have a more reform-minded majority bloc that can fire and replace DeJoy.

Sign the Petition: Tell the USPS Board of Governors to fire Postmaster General Louis DeJoy and fix Trump's manufactured Postal Service crisis >>

DeJoy -- a GOP mega-donor with no previous USPS experience -- spent most of last year trying to gum up Postal Service operations. He imposed outrageous restrictions on postal workers, removed mailboxes by the truckload, reassigned top officials to give himself more power, and more.

And we now know that sabotaging the USPS was a key part of Trump's plan to undermine vote-by-mail in the 2020 election. In fact, Trump admitted it -- when he said he was against funding the USPS because "they need that money in order to make the Post Office work so it can take all of these millions and millions of ballots." [1]

But unless we take action, DeJoy will remain Postmaster General for -- in his words -- "a long time," [2] calling the shots for the very agency he has tried to destroy.

Millions of Americans are still counting on the Postal Service to safely deliver their paychecks, life-saving medications, letters from their loved ones, and more. That's why the USPS Board of Governors must make defending this cherished institution -- and firing DeJoy -- a top priority.

Add your name if you agree: As soon as Biden's new nominees are confirmed, the USPS Board of Governors must fire Louis DeJoy.

Though millions of Americans were able to vote successfully by mail last fall -- one of the reasons we saw record voter turnout, despite the pandemic -- DeJoy has proven that he cannot be trusted with the enormous responsibility of running the USPS.

We must make sure he can no longer put the integrity of our Postal Service at risk.

There is no question that the Post Office needs help. But DeJoy has shown a shocking lack of regard for the agency, has alienated a significant chunk of the public and has failed to offer a path forward that does not diminish the service.

The fact is, most Americans -- at the moment -- do not experience the postal service as an unmitigated disaster; it has long been one of the most popular government agencies in America. People want it to survive. But the numbers tell a striking story: ticking along as usual isn't working.

The Post Office should not be a partisan agency, and is set up to avoid partisan spats -- that's why it's so egregious that DeJoy was put in the role in the first place, and it's the same reason President Joe Biden can't simply fire him.

Only the board of governors that appointed DeJoy can fire him. But that doesn't mean there are no options. To begin with, Americans can demand that DeJoy resign. And Biden can remove members of the board of governors for cause, though that, too, runs the risk of being perceived as compounding the partisanship.

The most straightforward route involves the board removing DeJoy. Currently, there are three Republicans, one Democrat, and three open seats on the board; if the Senate confirms all of Biden's nominees to those open seats, then the board will have the power to remove DeJoy if he refuses to step down.

Solving problems in a public institution requires broad trust in the person in charge.

The Trump administration hollowed out American confidence in government and in some of our most valued institutions. DeJoy is one of Trump's legacies. If we want to save the Post Office, then he needs to go.
