In the 1970s and 1980s, tons of Catholic priests were murdered, tourtured, dissappeared, many catholic liety the same, for practicing their religion ... in Central America, El Salvador, Nigeragua, Chile, Argentina, Brazin and so on ... Priests and Bishops were hunted down, put in front of firing squads and killed.

Yet in the US I don't hear the Christian right ever bring that up, NEVER, most of the so called christian right that loves to play victom, love to pretend they are being persecuted, never bring up the murder of Catholic priests and bishops in Latin America in the 70s and 89s .... Why?

Because they were liberation theologists (i.e. people that take the Gospel and its social message seriously), and because they were murdered by regiems backed by the United States ... they were focusing on helping the poor, and that is unacceptable to the right wing ... they were focusing on following the example of Christ and the early church in social matters ... and that is unnaceptable to the right.

Priests, by the hundreds were dragged before firing squads, inprisoned, tortured for practicing their faith, for service to God, while almost all of the so called christian right stood by silently.

It just goes to show the real God of many on the christian right, it's Capitalism and the State ....

....

I don't believe that to be the case at all. Many on the right believe it is exactly appropriate- and good- for the religious to be providing charity, and NOT the state.

Not really. You're talking about history here, and at the time many were terribly concerned. And have NOT forgotten Bishop Romero. What's to bring up now except a recitation of history?

You didn't even mention the nuns. They haven't been forgotten either.

Ok ... that doesn't change the point of my post, that christians being murdered for their faith was largely ignored by the christian right.

I've never heard about that until recently when it came out. I was never big on current events as a kid.
Therefore, it could be that some were simply ignorant - like me.

Anyway, why do you assume they were ignored by the Christian right? Why do you single out the right? Are you saying there were no left-wingers (Christians or not) who knew and ignored?

Why put another division among Christians? I notice that even from that other thread.
Like as if it's not bad enough that we're spintered into different denominations/interpretations....now, you're also adding the "left and the right." Like hands and feet... and eyes and ears...like lungs and kidneys....

How do you know they didn't do anything?

Saying prayers for them is not ignoring. Our church prays for countries that are going through upheavals, and for Christians that are being persecuted....praying that God provide them with strength and comfort, to ease their sufferings. Sometimes we're updated with the most recent local news that came out due to words from our missionary that's in a region. A lot of persecutions don't make it to mainstream media.

Thanks to VOICE OF MARTYRS, we learn about the persecutions.

If there's One who can do what is best.....it is God! Every practicing Christian knows that!
PRAYERS. That's doing something.

You're being melo-dramatic.

1. The Christian left doesn't have nearly as much clout and influence or media time.
2. The Christian left DID talk about it in the US, and a lot, along with the general left.
2. I assume they were ignored because the Christian right has immense political power, and it was never a political priority to help the persecuted christians of latin america.

What are your sources for this assertion?

Find me where the Christian right in the media spoke against the persecutions ....

We hardly make it to mainstream media! You have to be a persecuted lgbt to make it to the media.

If you're just a Christian....forget it! They don't even report atrocities being done to Christian in other countries happening today as we speak! You'll hear about Christian persecutions in VOM!

Political power is nothing compared to God's power!

Ok, but why are they pressuring the government IN PUBLIC on many different issues, but totally silent on these issues?

I never hear about it from the christian right.

What is there to hear unless there is an ongoing historical discussion? I don't hear Christians sitting around discussing St. Monica, a worthy topic of discussion, or the martyrdom of St. Sebastian either. This doesn't mean that folks aren't aware of what happened in El Salvador and elsewhere, only that it doesn't come up.

I think your beginning a thread on murdered clerics would be great. Just don't limit the discussion to Latin or South America because these murders have happened all over the world.

Si, and senor Pope is now calling them by their true names, paganos...

You are making an assertion.

I am curious as to how you came about to realize your assertion.

Because I am curious I would like to know your sources so I can learn about it myself.

So, again, what sources are you using for this? What books have you read on this subject? Which authors? Which websites?

Thank you for providing them.

Who are they?
What issues? When?

You're talking about atrocities that happened in the 70's and 80's, if I'm not mistaken. I'm getting confused.
Be specific.

The Christian Right, issues such as abortion, pro-war and so on.

The Christian right was going on about these issues in the 70s and 80s as well.

Noam Chomsky wrote a lot about the persecution of the Church in Latin America, , read about Oscar Romero, Jon Sobrino. Just look up the history of Liberation Theology in Latin America.

About the Christian right in America ignoring it ... that just comes from my personal observation ... I never hear anything about it from the American evangelical right.

They weren't targeted because of their religion; they were targeted because they were seen as a thread to the government, they just happen to base their political activism on religious dogma. Within the context of the Cold War they were deemed Marxists and thus targeted by some governments in Latin America.

Their religion told them to give a "preferential option to the poor" (theological term), their faith told them they should support the poor in their struggle for emancipation, that's persecution based on religious practice.

They followed the example of christ.

He writes about them in a bunch, I can't think off hand which ones, it's been a while, but you can just look up the history of liberation theology.

it was a bit more complex than that.

Latin America was a hotbed of catholic leftist ideology - "liberation theology". its focus was on empowering the poor, with a focus on community action and education.

when people are empowered, educated and united, it is a lot more difficult to push them around. the right/fascist govts of latin America did everything in their power to prevent people from being empowered - and the US did what it could to help squash those recalcitrants who believed in social justice.

Priests/nuns/bishops? no problem. being of the cloth would not save you from the right.

nuns were viciously raped and tortured, while CIA operatives stood by.

they were murdered because of their politics, not their religion.

but Catholicism itself is under threat today in latin America - Evangelicals In Brazil Rise In Power With Consequences For Catholics, Gays

It wasn't just Catholics, evangelicals were also part of the liberation theology movement.

And their politics were no less their religion than anti-abortion activists in the US are motivated by religion. If anti-abortion activists in the US are killed would you say "oh it's not their religion its their politics?"
