Vegetative is a terrible word to use. This women has woken up multiple times since she first entered such a state. When pulling the plug, the patient has sustained permanent brain damage making recovery impossible. Sometimes people can recover from a comatose state, but with certain conditions, it is impossible to recover.

The first time Lilly woke up fully was eight months after the cardiac arrest and stroke. She talked for about 90 minutes, then drifted back into unconsciousness. Each time she fully wakes, Minnie Smith talks to her about how long she's been gone.

Sometimes people can recover from a comatose state, but with certain conditions, it is impossible to recover.

Looks like its not a comatose state but a "minimally conscious state".

Minimally conscious state - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A minimally conscious state (MCS) is a condition distinct from coma or the vegetative state, in which a patient exhibits deliberate, or cognitively mediated, behavior often enough, or consistently enough, for clinicians to be able to distinguish it from entirely unconscious, reflexive responses.

Gary Dockery - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

On September 17, 1988 he was shot in the forehead by a drunken assailant as he responded to a domestic disturbance call. He slipped into what doctors called a persistent vegetative state, unable to communicate except occasionally with eye blinks and groans — indicating that part of his brain was still working.

Terry Wallis - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

regained awareness after spending almost 20 years in a minimally conscious state.

Evalu8 -

Wallis was frequently classified as being in a permanent vegetative state. Though his family fought for a re-evaluation after seeing many promising signs that he was trying to communicate, their requests were turned down.
