Pelosi kicks butts near House floor:  No smoking - CNN.com

WASHINGTON (AP) -- New House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is snuffing out one of Congress' enduring prerogatives, still cherished by some lawmakers -- the right to smoke near the floor of the House.

Pelosi, D-California, announced Wednesday that effective immediately, House members would no longer be able to light up in the ornate Speaker's Lobby off the House floor where lawmakers mingle during votes.

The room is often hazy with smoke, as it was Tuesday night as the House voted on anti-terror legislation; Minority Leader John Boehner, R-Ohio, often has a cigarette in hand, for example.

"The days of smoke-filled rooms in the United States Capitol are over," Pelosi said. "Medical science has unquestionably established the dangerous effects of secondhand smoke, including an increased risk of cancer and respiratory diseases. I am a firm believer that Congress should lead by example."...

aps is going to love this. Was this on her 100 hour list?

Wow....I bet all those Republican lawmakers from the tobacco cultivating states are in a huff over this.

Do you ever just check yourself before saying such inane things? Guess what, disney, there are democratic lawmakers in each of those states, as well.

Woo hoo! This has made my day! I am so proud of her.

:donkeyfla

LOL! I posted before I saw this. I give you points for thinking of me and accurately assessing my reaction. ;)

I know I am rough on smokers, but I can't help myself. :3oops:

But...don't people have right to smoke??

As if this were even a reasonable issue to take up when so much more is at stake than whether someone smokes in the speakers lobby as they always have. This is just a bunch of chest-thumping from Nazi Pelosi; I am sure we can look forward to plenty of it for the next couple of years.

I know geez, how dare she want a healthy working environment. That's right up there with killing millions of people and trying to take over the world. What a Nazi. What's next the congressmen aren't allowed to have a few glasses of scotch before they drive home? When will it end?

aps believes the government shouldn't tell us what we can or can't do....except for this. ;)

This has nothing to do with the government telling the people what to do. This is the government telling the government what to do.

Your histrionics and grossly exaggerated hyperbole are duly noted and given their proper acknowledgement. :moon: :moon: :moon: :moon:

I respond with what I am given. You're the one comparing our Speaker of the House to a member of the Nazi party. I hope you never complain about people comparing Bush to a Nazi because then you would just be a hypocrite.

:2wave:

but but but....(the liberals whine)....Bush is taking away your rights!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you honestly trying to compare the right to having a private phone conversation in your own home to being able to smoke in a public environment?

When Nancy starts trying to ban smoking from the privacy of your own home we can talk.

I doubt it. Cold Dirt just wants to whine himself by attacking the left. It's all he does.

"Nazi" Pelosi happens to be a play (onomotapaeic) on her name "Nancy". However, it is also appropriate as she is big on government involvement in people's lives. She is one of the "intolerant" liberals.

For the record, I have no problem with people calling Bush a Nazi if they want. It's not my concern.

To my original point...I find it very telling that Ms. Pelosi's most newsworthy achievement so far has been to ban smoking on the house floor. I just think it's a blatant foreshadowing of how effective she is going to be and the types of irrelevant causes she will be taking up.

I can see The Highest Ranking Elected Minority, Democrat Nancy Pelosi, is going to be a burr under the saddle of the cons for the next couple of years. ;)

Maybe it'll make them forget about their ol' standby..."but what about Cl.....".....naaaaaaaah that's too ingrained in their danged DNA...LOL...:2rofll:

I doubt that says anything. The ban on smoking just makes for a safer and healthier working environment.

I wonder what achievement's Haster made in his first 7 days as Speaker. I can't seem to find anything.

I also doubt you will find photos of Hastert standing in front of the House in designer shoes and suits flexing his biceps with headlines like "I have the power" either. Hmmm?

No because he was to busy trying to bang his pages.

It was an obvious publicity stunt for a delcaration of the strength women are reciving in this country. I highly doubt it was Nancy's idea.

No because he was to busy trying to bang his pages.

The above quote is proof enough that I shouldn't waste my time having any kind of serious conversation with you. Hastert was under no suspicion of sexual impropriety with his or any pages. Do try to know your topic before you start hacking at your keyboard in the future.

So now you lefty's are putting rights into categories....some are worth fighting for and some are not........

I believe every American has the right to smoke and not have their phones tapped......

why should one American have a right and another not?...also, even though I think smoking is only for a stupid idiot asking for cancer....no one has yet proved that second hand smoke causes cancer........

so what is next liberals...the so called fighters of freedom and American rights........banning soft drinks because the cause obesity? How about fried foods because of cholesterol....

BTW, Bush isn't tapping every American phone (the lie you liberals love trying to pass off) only those who are talking to known terrorists.......but Nancy is banning all people from smoking........
