Palestinian arrested for insulting Islam on Facebook

Over several years, Husayin is suspected of posting arguments in favor of atheism on English and Arabic blogs, where he described the God of Islam as having the attributes of a "primitive Beduin." He called Islam a "blind faith that grows and takes over people's minds where there is irrationality and ignorance."

If that wasn't enough, he is also suspected of creating three Facebook groups in which he sarcastically declared himself God and ordered his followers, among other things, to smoke marijuana in verses that spoof the Muslim holy book, the Koran. At its peak, Husayin's Arabic-language blog had more than 70,000 visitors, overwhelmingly from Arab countries.

His Facebook groups elicited hundreds of angry comments, detailed death threats and the formation of more than a dozen Facebook groups against him, including once called "Fight the blasphemer who said 'I am God.'"

Husayin used a fake name on his English and Arabic-language blogs and Facebook pages. After his mother discovered articles on atheism on his computer, she canceled his Internet connection in hopes that he would change his mind.

Poor guy.

He is screwed.

THis is how the entire world will operate some day if the UNHRC is successful in its agenda.

His arrest validates his point of view.

What agenda is that?

ctually I think that a person who claims that he is God should be commited, the question is what motivated the athorities to arrest him, him being loon or his atheisem

A bit of both. I think the fact he was so high profile lead to the authorities hand being tied.
If he was some quiet crazy person who attracted 1 or 2 Arabs to his site, he'd just get a slap on the wrist

I've ran across many of his critiques on Islam before on Islamic sites/discussions. I didn't know he was Palestinian, I'm pleasantly surprised.

I only think he should be commited if he thinks it so.

Ohhh that

Well, it wouldn't have got anywhere anyway. Islamic countries already in many cases have their own laws restricting things

Yes, that agenda.

and as far as getting anywhere, it has, and not only in Islamic countries that have no regard for liberal freedoms, but in western countries where freedoms are being compromised as well.

Heck -- Just ask Jacqui Smith.

Their agenda to make criticism of Islam a crime.

Looking over the source you provided it seems more that they are just saying hate speech laws apply to religion as well. This case would actually fit under that description.

Well, that's another vote in favor of thought crime.

What did Jacqui Smith do now? Is this about the banning?

I am sorry, did I ever say I supported it? All I was saying is the UNHRC was talking about hate speech rather than simple criticism.

So nevermind Freedom of speech, freedom of religion, such rights should all be damned and the person committed because you disagree with their beliefs and or perception of reality.

To quote Howard Stern
“I'm sickened by all religions. Religion has divided people. I don't think there's any difference between the pope wearing a large hat and parading around with a smoking purse and an African painting his face white and praying to a rock.”

Anywho it reminds me of a 70s hard rock band I saw recently that reminded me that all of us are Godz

lyrics snip from THE GODZ Gotta Keep A Runnin'

Now dig up ya'll
Now we're stoned to the bone, hot and sweaty
Look at us, we're everything your parents ever warned you about
They think we're all junkies, but everybody's some kind of junkie
There's money junkies, booze junkies, dope junkies, sex junkies,
And there's one thing they can't understand , all of us, you and I, we're Godz , and Godz are rock and roll junkies
Now every night we get into a different town
Every night we get high, every night we rock and roll
Every night we go crazy and we know we're killing ourselves, but it feels so... good
They try to tell us rock and roll is dead , but Godz rock and roll ain't dead
Rock and roll is why we're all here
Rock and roll is why we got long hair and get high
Rock and roll is why we dress the way we do
Rock and roll has turned us into something that they can't stand, but rock and roll has created us
Rock and roll has made us into machines
We can't see straight
We can't think straight
We can't hear straight
We can't feel nothing , got no heart and soul, but we're Godz
And someday there'll be thousands of us, thousands of Godz, thousands of machines
More of us than there is of them, they can't stop the Godz rock and roll machine, stop the machine......machine
The Godz are rock and roll machines
No hearts but at least we're machines
The Godz are rock and roll machines

The Godz are rock and roll machines (x8)

Here is the song
The Godz - Gotta Keep A Runnin'

His concerns over freedom of speech have nothing to do with conspiracies. Your need to ridicule his views speaks for itself.

The issue as to freedom of religion/speech is as he stated an issue not just in the East but also West and in China and many nations.

In Canada one does not have to be a conspiracy nut to have legal concerns as to how human rights tribunals are going too far in decisions and now raise constitutional issues as to whether they are going so far as to conflict with our Charter of Rights.

Freedom to criticize the government of the day, the religion of the day, is not a left or right wing issue or the exclusive domain of conspiracy nuts.

May I kindly suggest you discuss the issue rather than try paint the person engaging in the discussion with a simplistic label.

By the way I have read many of Gardner's responses. Can you find one conspiracy theory he has advanced?

Now we are on the topic, Gardner is an alien. He is a shapeshifter. He actually is part of an advance alien force come to scout us before they invade.

You have to love c onspiracies.

Getting back to the point of this thread-freedom to criticize Islam in many Islam nations is highly dangerous if not life threatening. That is a fact. Freedom of speech and religion is not prevalent in for example the Middle East, and its one reason many who support Israel have problems with the notion of Muslim extremist fundamentalists against Israel who suggest they have no problems against Jews just Zionists and then in the next breath advocate fundamentalist Muslim dogma that exhibits intolerance of all non Muslims.

Being a non Muslim, feminist, gay, communist, atheist, Bahaii, Jew, Hindu, Buddist, Berber, Druze, Assyrian or progressive critic of Islam in the Muslim world is dangerous and gets people killed, tortured and beaten up. A lot of it is inter-sect violence between Muslims of different sects as well.

What happened to this individual is one of many concerns some of us have with some of you that blindly support regimes and tyranical belief systems that are totalitarian in nature and restrict freedoms you and I take for granted. It has nothing to do with tin foil and everything to do with fundamentalist preachers and ego maniac leaders propped in their positions with Mukbarrat political police forces modelled from the Gestapo who are quite ruthless and efficient in tracking people down and having them disappear.

You want to giggle at people concerned about freedom of speech being eroded go ahead though. Some people find the rights they take for granted a gigglefest I suppose.

Freedom of religion and freedom of speech is one thing, claiming you are a god is a whole different thing, such a person is a danger to society and should be commited and treated by psychiatrist. Or mybe ending up like David Koresh seems a better idea for how to deal with such loons for you?

A mysterious blogger who set off an uproar in the Arab world by claiming he was God and hurling insults at the Prophet Muhammad is now behind bars — caught in a sting that used Facebook to track him down.

I would agree, if he was serious he needs some 'help'. If he was merely a fool, well, they actually take God seriously over there.

Ido on this one I will respectfully disagree with you and I will say why. I believe most people who claim to be God are no danger to anyone or themselves unless and until they indicate symptoms or signs they are going to be violent to themselves or others. I would agree if they show indications of potential violence, we draw the line...but if they simply rave and rant...no. I also appreciate its a fine line as to how long you wait until someone lights themselves or someone else on fire so to speak.

However if as you said this person is a winnbut and simply delusional, most delusional people are not violent or even a danger to themselves and the problem with wanting to lock anyone up who is delusional is that it becomes one of having to ask where do you draw the line as to when intervention is warranted. There's a fine line between harmless delusional people and say politicians or for that matter all of us on this forum and what we write.

I would argue the basic concept of freedom of speech or religion necessarily includes the right of others to say things you and I may very well consider wingnut babblings of a mad man. Why? Because if our laws are too restrictive in the name of putting into hospital such people, surely for the same reasons, they could also be used to lock people in prison for their political beliefs claiming those political beliefs are symptoms of their mental illness.

The Soviet Union and Russia today show how that is done.

Religious beliefs lead many to say very questionable things and the problem is a fair and democratic law that balances individual and collective rights plays a very difficult juggling act when it tries to differentiate between what is and what is not acceptable in terms of what can be said in a society.

If as you say this man was a harmless wing nut, all the more reason to simply ignore him.

We already see China policing and restricting what can be placed on the inter-net. What next? Do we have psychiatrists reading the internet looking to find evidence people are nuts so they can lock them up?

If that was the case, this entire forum will end up in a nut house.

That said, I believe the true story here is in certain cultures and countries , the limits as to what people are allowed to say or the behaviours they engage in are far more restrictive then what we take for granted in the Western world.

In fact the only way to understand just how restrictive it can be people truly need to travel to other countries to see how for example in certain Muslim states- what happens when you speak out and question the government or religious precepts.

Bahaiis, Christians, Zoroastreans, and Jews in Iran have been killed, tortured in prson or persecuted for trying to speak out seeking their religious freedoms. For that matter so have feminists, journalists, student activists, government opposition, gays, atheists, communists and socialists and trade unionists.

In Syria, there is a complex level of restrictions imposed by the Mukbarrat against their Muslim Brotherhood, other Sunni Muslim organizations, the Assurians, Berbers, Jews, Christians and Druze. In Lebanon the Shiite, Sunni and Christian sectors remain deeply entrenched and in a tense state of co-existence.

In Jordan you would be put in jail if you openly questioned Islam or its government.

In Egypt opposition lands you in jail or a disappearance and the friction with the Muslim Brotherhood that threatens to erupt and will erupt when Mubarak dies, is a reality. In Sudan the genocide of Southern Sudanese is a complex mix of racism and anti Christianism which fuels the tyranny against the southern Christians.

In Saudi Arabia the government plays to its majority Wahabi extremists. Yemen barely manages to contain the influx of Muslim fundamentalist terrorists who now use it as their headquarters and have turned it into the new Damascus.

In all these countries freedom of political speech and religion are deeply inter-connected and often fundamentalist religion is the pretense the governments will use to justify restricting freedom of speech.

That is the world of the Middle East-where religion and politics are fused into one confusing boiling pot of rhetoric and on any given day someone is arrested or tortured or disappears for daring speak out.
