Idaho police officers opened fire from behind a chain-link fence just seconds after exiting their patrol cars and critically wounded a teenage boy — described by his family as nonverbal, autistic and intellectually disabled — as he stepped toward them with a knife, video from a witness shows.

Seventeen-year-old Victor Perez, who also has cerebral palsy, remained hospitalized in critical condition Tuesday after having nine bullets removed from his body and having his leg amputated, Ana Vazquez, his aunt, told The Associated Press. Doctors were planning tests on his brain activity.

“We don’t know if he’s going to wake up,” she said.
The shooting Saturday in Pocatello outraged the boy’s family and neighbors as well as viewers online who questioned why the officers opened fire within about 12 seconds of exiting their patrol cars while making no apparent effort to de-escalate the situation or use less lethal weapons.

Why open fire so quickly? The officers were in no immediate danger

Police continue to be entirely unequipped to deal with people with disabilities

If you are a chicken shit, you should not become a cop

“We understand the concern and emotion surrounding the officer-involved shooting that occurred,” he said, adding, “We are also aware of the video circulating online, which shows only one angle. The full picture requires careful review of all facts and evidence.”

So in another angle the cops don't just roll up, pull out their guns to right away confront the kid, and then the fence between the cops and the kid magically disappears?

SMH

This will not end well for that police department.

as far as I can see there's also two other people who could have been struck by their fire (the teen's sister and a neighbor)

why such seemingly callous disregard for them

That is just straight out murder. The poor people with the autistic boy trying to calm him were in more danger from the damn police than they were from the poor boy. What the hell has happened to US policing? I don't remember it being like this when I was younger!

I can tell you 100% that if that were to happen here in NZ, not that it ever would, those police would be on murder charges in an instant based on that video. The public outrage would go straight to the heads of govt.

I suspect we're just more able to find out about these incidents.

That looks REALLY bad.

A lot of chicken shits seem to gravitate towards the job

I had quite a few friends in high school that joined the Sheriffs. I never ask them about their job when we talk because I am always afraid that they will inadvertently admit to arresting an innocent person or shooting one or planting evidence. Kinda ended our actual friendship.

That about sums it up... sounds like they all shot as well... 5 counts of murder.

One of the things that I always hate about police shooting videos is watching multiple officers almost empty their guns into some guy, even when the officers aren't even very threatened like in this case. One guy shoots and they all open up with multiple shots regardless of the threat level. I assume that it is just evil training. Amazing that the police where we both live now don't even routinely carry guns, and of course that means that it is very rare that anyone, criminal or cop, gets killed. In a case like that video you can virtually guarantee that here no one gets hurt. Sad that America has got so bad.

Seems like police not doing good job of handling their adrenaline rush (at the very least). I know officers (in general) these days are trained on de-escalation techniques, but are they trained on self-de-escalation techniques? I think that was the piece missing in this case (Again, at the very least).

It is very poor training and procedure. One cop should take the lead and everybody else should be holstered. It is like a pack of wild dogs watching these idiots charge in, guns drawn ready to shoot. The same happens with conflicting commands. One cop is screaming keep your hands up and another cop is screaming open the door and both are screaming "mother****er" and "I will shoot you in the ****ing head". Just piss poor training.

Yeah, some things like this are not the result of malfeasance; sometimes, it's just negligence.

Not to mention that a person with sufficient training in hand to hand could have easily disarmed this individual without violence.

What happened to tasers being an alternative to deadly force?

Absolutely despicable, 5 adult, supposedly trained, officers separated from the teen by a chain link fence and the only option they could come up with was to shoot dead blank, from safety on their side of the fence? The review board should state firing for all of them and let the law suits be on them solely.

Yeah that could have been handled better. Need more training.

A properly trained and equipped team will have one officer designated as non lethal (taser) and one with a gun in case the taser doesn't work.

Also only one officer should be talking to the man to avoid conflicting instructions.

This was chaotic.

It's absolutely ridiculous for a cop to get anywhere near someone with a knife even if they're Bruce Lee.
