Nearly 200 independent movie theaters across the United States on Tuesday screened the film version of George Orwell's "1984" novel about a dystopian future, in what organizers said was a stand against U.S. President Donald Trump's administration.

The United State of Cinema, which arranged the screenings in 44 U.S. states for one day only, said it was done to "take a stand for our most basic values: freedom of speech, respect for our fellow human beings, and the simple truth that there are no such things as 'alternative facts.'"

1984 is an excellent and disturbing book. Good movie with John Hurt, too.

“For, after all, how do we know that two and two make four? Or that the force of gravity works? Or that the past is unchangeable? If both the past and the external world exist only in the mind, and if the mind itself is controllable – what then?”
― George Orwell, 1984

“You are a slow learner, Winston."

"How can I help it? How can I help but see what is in front of my eyes? Two and two are four."

"Sometimes, Winston. Sometimes they are five. Sometimes they are three. Sometimes they are all of them at once. You must try harder. It is not easy to become sane.”
― George Orwell, 1984

Dylan Skolnick, co-director of the Cinema Arts Centre on Long Island, New York, who came up with the idea along with Adam Birnbaum, director of film programming at the Avon Theatre Film Centre in Connecticut, told Al Jazeera that the Trump administration's "undermining of the concept of facts and the demonization of foreign enemies...really resonate in 1984."

"There's a central line from the book about the freedom to say that two plus two equals four, even when the government is telling you that two plus two equals five," he said.

"No one is suggesting that we're living in Orwell's world," Skolnick said. "But the road to that world is people just becoming disengaged and allowing their government to do whatever it wants."

To that end, he added, the screening day is "designed to get people to be talking and discussing and active in the political conversation that is happening in America right now—and throughout the world, it turns out."

Sounds like fear mongering to me.

Except I know that the Federal Government has been relentlessly accumulating power by what ever means necessary for most if not all of my life.

And that they dont care much about the Constitution.

Nor honesty.

TRUMP?

Let's talk about Hillary, and the D's attempt to call off a primary so that they could coronate her.....

How many who watch the movie think about that I wonder.

Reminds me of when they added an anti-Bush screed as a "special feature" on the Running Man DVD.

I'm sure the audiences are full of people who laughed at the "paranoia" of movie versions of Atlas Shrugged being made over the last 8 years.

Be a good citizen, Winston.

I don't get this 1984 thing.

It bears no relationship to Trump. The governments are competent and effective.

If you want to pick an Orwell book that's relevant, I'd go with Animal Farm.

Orwell's nightmarish vision of the future has been happening long before Trump ever became POTUS.

1984, was written about communism. Big Brother, state authority, party loyalty, all that jazz. Here's a dystopian, that you can draw parallels from, although I believe strongly, that the American people in current form, will not allow our country to go full blown fascist.

1984 was also primarily about a Surveillance State that could monitor everyone - maybe Susan Rice should re-watch it, just for pointers.

That was a very good movie, I used to have it on video.

1984 is the Utopian dream world of the left. The exact opposite of conservatism. All powerful government, which they strive for.

Yes. This problem and that of Newspeak has been increasing rapidly. I have thought of that often since 2008.

Well, it was written specifically about Stalinism.

Err... George Orwell was very much left-wing and a socialist and 1984 was written as a warning. So basically the exact opposite of what you have just said.

You are so right, we have not seen any of the for over a generation at the national level.

Good Catch.

Hillary isn't President. Hillary doesn't use "alternative facts."

The W H is full of people who use alternative facts. They tell us repeatedly that two plus two equals three or five. Obama wiretapped him (although an intel investigation has testified that is false). Trump had the largest audience of an inauguration in history (although official sources and photographs say the turnout was low). That there is no real Russia story (although our intel agencies have been investigating this for many months, presumably because there is so much information to collect and review, including communications between the Trump team and Russia). Kellyanne Conway was banned from a network for lying. Kellyanne Conway stated that Sean Spicer and the W H use "alternative facts" and that's fine. And so on.

It's 1984 in 2017. Trump is so divorced from reality that there are wonderings behind the scenes about his mental health.

• Orwell was introduced to the Fabian Society by his French teacher and lifelong friend Aldous Huxley. However, he later became disenchanted with the Fabian Society and it is now thought his book 1984 (a title chosen to mark the 100th anniversary of the Fabians) was really a satirical polemic describing the kind of world he believed the Fabians would achieve. The Fabian Society acquired and sealed the archives of Orwell when his second wife Sonia died some years ago. According to representatives of the publishing company Harper Collins, the Fabians will be in control of the "1984" copyright and name through the year 2025, and they have done their best to block unauthorized investigative research about Orwell's anti-socialist works. Even rights to Orwell's estate fell under control of the Fabian Society. [Camelot]

They probably killed him....a la Clinton.

I'd backup on the 'wiretapped'/surveillance issue if I were you. The dogs begin to smell her..

So people keep claiming they killed him without any evidence whatsoever because they are unable to accept that their fantasies are false?

You have another theory?

He died within days after "1984" was published.

I can tell you with great confidence that the 1984 world is not a conservative dream world. So you are wrong. Whatever way the writer leaned has nothing to do with the world he wrote about.

I would actually go with Idiocracy. Reality show President. 1984 belongs more to the progressive authoritarians. Political correctness, censorship, changing the meaning of words to fit a political narrative (like progressive).

Why? She isn't the President, and presumably you aren't a Democrat, so why would you care about the "coronation" attempt?

You said 1984 was a utopian dream of the left, but it was written as a dystopia by a 'leftist'. Hence the complete opposite of what you said.

What's it going to do? To change, We the People need to change, we need to think and interact intelligently in the system to control it. But here we have the Republocrats election after election trying to shove the biggest turds they can find down our throats, and we line up asking for more. So long as we support the status quo, we will get nothing but the status quo.
