To me, the story is not about O'Reilly talking about illegal immigrants, becasue, in my honest opinion, there is some truth to what he claims. The story is Geraldo Rivera's ripping him a new hole (in fact, several of them).

O'Reilly's MO has always been to bully his opponent instead of intelligently debating. He finally ran into someone he could not bully, and who bit him back in a huge way. In his attempt to shut up Rivera, he became the one who was shut up, as Rivera gave him the comeuppance which has been due him for a long time.

This is one HELL of an exchange, but it proves a point. If you have valid points to make, but instead of making them, you try to intimidate your political opponent, you eventually lose the argument, and end up looking like a horse's a$$, which is what O'Reilly is.

Article, along with video, is here.

The title of your article says it all, this was not an immigrant it was an illegal immigrant. I saw the interview live, and Geraldo was just as unhinged not to mention that his argument was bullshit and O'Reilly was right, this guy had no bussiness being in the country in the first place.

They were BOTH right.

Everyone, please notice the escalation in BS journalism/political commentary in the media. It seems that we all are eating it up too. Look how Rosie's ratings have skyrocketed! Look at how many people still watch O'Reilly. See how heated some of you people can get over these snake-oil salesmen.

I think that shouting match was planned and semi-rehearsed. It was taken right out of the WWF textbook. These guys are pros and we are the gullible "little people."

Does anyone remember the time when we only had 3 or 4 channels to get our news from? ABC, NBC and CBS? It really didn't matter back then which channel you got your news from because they all reported the same thing. It was rather bland, actually, but when some would ask, "How did you know that?" You could say, "I heard it on the news last night." And that alone was all the proof anyone needed. The media had some dignity back then. If it was on the evening news, you could pretty much believe the accuracy or the well-intended pursuit of accuracy from any of the networks.

But today, you got 666 channels of sh** on the TV to choose from. The lengths some of these commentators will go to, to set themselves above and beyond, never ceases to amaze me.

Are they entertaining? You betcha! Are they credible? About as credible as professional wrestling.

By all appearances, the media is capitolizing on the divisions amongst American ideology and it's supporting population. And as a result, in the name of competiton, it is necessary for them to drive the wedge in deeper and deeper in order to maintain their ratings. Their money is in division. Reminds me of Tokyo Rose. The famous propagandist that tried to challenge the loyalty of our fighting troops in WW2.

The likes of O'Reilly, Rosie, Coulter, Rush, Olbermann, Hannity, make their money by dividing this nation as much as they humanly possibly can. And they are not going to stop until the well has run dry.

Eat it up people!

Well said Captain. I agree it did seem rather scripted, they're both good actors but journalistic wise I have no respect for either of them.
It's getting increasingly difficult to watch any kind of news show that doesn't have some sort of personal banter or commentary. It annoys me to no end.

I have never been a big Geraldo fan since he went out of his way prosecute Jon Benet's parents in the media. I remember him antagonizing the KKK (antagnozing the antagonists :rofl) in Janesville, WI once and getting his face punched out too. Geraldo is no stranger to rating stunts. He has proven time and time again he is not afraid to go beyond to remain on the top.

But, that being said, I am rather annoyed that Geraldo would even compromise his minimal credibility by even being on the same set with an over-the-top tabloid commentator such as O'Reilly. But, like I said, his bread and butter depends on his ratings and it appears America chooses tabloid over bland.

They were both right. This was a tragedy about alcohol and driving. But that makes for boring news. That happens every day in America. But if you could put the spin on it to blame illegal immigrants, and tie the real story to somethng more savory...you have now sucessfully created news....albeit tabloid.

Theres is no spin in blaming the perpetrator.

And I gotta Say O'reilly Crushes Geraldo, because Geraldo tries to make it about race, when all O'Reilly mentioned was illegality.

O'Reilly is right, if this Illegal immigrant had been deported after his first DUI the 2 Virgina Beach girls would be alive today. ~ Sgt Rock

A tragedy that would never have happened if the man would have been deported after his first DUI! That's why this story was important. If the law would have been followed and this man deported those two girls would still be alive.

Absolutely. I am reminded what my ol' pappy used to say, "If the dog hadn't stopped to sh**, he would have caught the rabbit."

If that illegal had been deported, THIS accident would have been prevented. But the bigger picture here is this. While you were watching that report, probably just as many people were killed by a drunk driver somewhere and that's the real story here.

Look, I am not defending the illegal. In fact, I have been considering using some vacation time up and go volunteering for the Minuteman Project, but that's another thread altogether.

I said it before. They were both right. O'Reilly did his usual spiel and attempted to spin it into a front-burner conservative issue to pander to his cult and Geraldo called him on it. I think the whole episode was pre-planned and orchestrated myself.

It also draws attention the the (don't quite remember what they were called) "Sanctuary Cities(?)" bullshit.

The fact that the man was an illegal immigrant has absolutely nothing at all to do with him driving while intoxicated. It was not his illegal status that got the two girls killed it was his drunk driving.
WE can follow the slippery slope of how "if" he had been deported he "might" not have done such and such. But the direct cause and effect had nothing to do with his immigration status but rather everything to do with that he was intoxicated while driving.
Rivera was right, O'Reilly was merely using this as a political rally cry for an agenda that has absolutely zip to do with the case in point.
Are illegal aliens a problem? yes sure they are, but simply being an illegal immigrant does not mean that they are going to be murders, thieves or so on.
Here's a better version of the exchange.

O'Reilly trying to draw a connection between being an illegal immigrant being inclined more to commit crimes, total bs.

I agree. This needs to be addressed. But not on the back of an alcohol tragedy. There is enough oppertunity to keep illegal immigrants on the front burner without having to twist everything that is bad on them.

If I am not mistaken, it is a felony for these cities to ursurp federal law. The Police Chief and Mayor of ANY "sanctuary" city, who turns a blind eye to illegal immigrants, should be brought up on felony charges. At a minimum, all federal funding should be withdrawn from these cities until they cooperate.

I agree, you hit the nail on the head Captain. However the Virginia Beach Chief of police disagree's with you. He puts all of the blame on the Federal government.

All they had to do was call I.C.E. the first time this guy was convicted.

Gerdildo looked to be Full of Crap, and trying to make it about RACE.

In his first or second line of the transcript, he attempts to insert a Red Herring mention of Polish or Jewish people.

He gives up what little credibility he might have had right there.

O'Reilly was talking about illegal aliens.

Gerdildo knows more the Latins in America, legal or not, the more his Spicy Latin Appeal sells him as an Entertainment News Jockey. Gerdildo jumped on Race because he wants to be seen as pro - latin regardless of legal status. Gerdildo is biased in Favor of more latinos in the U.S. by hook or by crook, and it is plain to see. He is an illegal immigration apologist and that too is plain to see.

He is illegal. If he would have been deported as he should have been after his first DUI those two girls would still be alive. There is "might" to this situation. It would not have happened.

This wouldn't even be an issue were the guy not an illegal immigrant. The incident happened not because he was not deported, but because he was reckless and irresponsible as an individual.
Those such as O'Reilly are shamelessly trying to make this look like as if it were representative of all illegal immigrants and then we go on a witch hunt.

He is a reckless and irresponsible individual who shouldn't have been here in the first place, should have been deported after his first DUI, and should have been deported after his second DUI, and now two girls are dead because of it.

If DUI laws were more stringent and better enforced, this tragedy would never have happened.

Gotta love Geraldo. I think we need to revoke citizenship to O'reilly and Hobbs, and all those who break the spirit of the laws of America(a promise land for those in bondage around the world.) They are the real illegal aliens  .

two girls are dead because of his irresponsible actions. I'm more than certain that there would be other deaths even if he were deported, just likely not American deaths. But this is all it is, drunk driving and that the guy himself is a moron.

They both went nuts and started spewing gibberish, but on the nuts and bolts of the issue, I agree with O'Reilly. If an illegal immigrant breaks the law, he should be deported. He should not be allowed to stay in this country illegally and continue to flout our laws.

It's not slippery slope to say if he had been deported, those two girls would be alive. His decision to drive drunk that day was the cause of their deaths, remove the cause and you remove the effect.

On O'Reilly in general, he can be overbearing, smug, obnoxious, and arrogant. That's part of his appeal, but I must say I agree with him on the core issues more times than not.

But I think it's perfectly legit to point out the consequences of "sanctuary cities" and police that can't/won't enforce the law. Obviously we have a drunk driving problem and our public attempts (anti drunk driving commercials, etc.) didn't work on this individual (maybe because they weren't in spanish?). But another more controllable part of the system failed as well -- law enforcement. What's wrong with Oreilly or anyone else pointing this out?

Yes. Cross the breaking the law - illegal imigration with breaking the law - DUI in the middle of a culture were a group of people can break the laws without fear of reprocution and you get people getting hurt and killed.
