I was just watching "60 Minutes" as a special Memorial Day segment was being aired when I heard the story of wounded Iraq War veterans returning to the scene of their injury in a special wounded warrior program called, "Operation Proper Exit". This segment had originally aired last year on or about November 6, 2011 but was being rebroadcasts today and it's amazing and heart wrenching.

These wounded warriors returned home battered, broken, hurting in body, heart, mind and spirit. And just as our Vietnam veterans experienced PTSD, so do our Iraq War veterans. And that's where Operation Proper Exit comes in.

This campaign takes Iraq vets back to the battlefield where their journey to recovery begins - at the sight where they sustained injury (or a flyover if a ground tour isn't possible), at the MASH unit where they were treated for their wounds, or visiting with the Iraqi troops who fought on their side or the civilians who they sought to aid in rebuilding their country.

This is an amazing effort made by our nation's military leaders to help "jump start" the recovery process for our wounded warriors. If you can, take a moment to remember and honor our veterans who served by watching the 60 Minutes segment or reading up on the Operation Proper Exit initiative. It's so much different from what our nation did for our veterans who fought in WWII or Vietnam. It was years before our veterans where allowed to return to the place where their nightmares began after those wars concluded. But w/Operation Proper Exit, veterans are able to start the healing process much sooner. Moreover, according to 60 Minutes, these same kind of return visits are slated to begin for Afghan war vets soon after combat troops start pulling out in 2014.
