Oklahoma lawmakers approve bill to revoke licenses of abortion doctors

An Oklahoma bill that could revoke the license of any doctor who performs an abortion has headed to the governor, with opponents saying the measure in unconstitutional and promising a legal battle against the cash-strapped state if it is approved.

In the Republican-dominated legislature, the state's House of Representatives overwhelmingly approved a Senate bill late on Thursday. Governor Mary Fallin, a Republican, has not yet indicated whether she will sign it.

Under the bill, doctors who perform abortions would risk losing their medical licenses. Exemptions would be given for those who perform the procedure for reasons including protecting the mother or removing a miscarried fetus.

"This is our proper function, to protect life,” said Senator Nathan Dahm, the Republican who authored the bill.

A handful of representatives argued against the bill, saying it violated the Constitution by prohibiting a doctor from performing a medical procedure that was legal under law.

The conservative view of less intrusive government…………… only a selective right offered but not to all

Great... the last line of the article... "If we take care of morality,” bill supporter David Brumbaugh, a Republican, said during deliberations, "God will take care of the economy."

Reminds me of the Congressman who once said that God put dinosaurs into the ground so that we would have oil.

Everyone knows that satan put them there 5950 years ago to trick us.

It will be challenged up to the SCOTUS as soon as some valiant doctor loses his license.

If the Democrats win then a liberal Justice will be appointed, and all such attempts to oppose Roe v. Wade will fail judicial review.

I also think if Trump wins, his appointee would support Roe v. Wade as well. :coffeepap:

Well, sadly the human rights of women are not safe in the hands of republican anti-choice extremists/republican lawmakers. Not even the constitutional rights of women are safe in the hands of extremists like those in Oklahoma who are trying to get their state sued and kicked in the nether regions by the courts when it hits the court system. Stupid, intrusive, woman-hating, extremist freedom/human rights deniers.

These 'lawmakers' are idjits - surely they know this will not pass a court challenge. What a waste of taxpayer dollars.

you last statement strikes me as funny.... abortion is very much a selective right only offered to some.... reality and biology dictates that only pregnant women are afforded the right.

in any event, this law goes way to far.... it's a fundamental ban on abortion and it can't pass constitutional muster as such.

These legislators are supremely ignorant ****s who think they have to right to control people's reproductive roles and how many children individuals want or don't want.

Anybody got a clue where they've concluded that the unborn or more valuable than the born? What is the antiquated and backward source which has the power to fill these politician's minds with the belief they have the right to engage in self-will-run-riot actions that is totally disregarding the US Constitution?

It appears that Oklahoma legislators have decided to employ a collective, deliberate act of despotism.

What I always find confusing in cases like this how some of these yokels can claim to be conservative and maintain they support personal freedom from government not interfering with personal decisions…….. as in “People are responsible for themselves” ……and then interfere/declare illegal the personal freedom women to make health decisions about her own body.........

Or are there exception to conservative values in certain cases yet still call oneself a conservative............I sure a blazes can't understand it........

I agree

Does anyone still wonder why Oklahoma is yet another one of the crapholes in this nation? Stupid people making stupid laws and wasting the little resources they have doing so.

Yeah.........but they are sure they have God on their side..... So how could they be wrong?

Which is why Oklahoma's state budget is in the toilet and our economy is stagnant...

There are times I just have to shake my head in sad wonder at my fellow Okies. I couldn't believe any of the PUBs think Fallon would make a great VP and they point to her 'success' in running Oklahoma... :doh
