Oil sands producers must do more to cut greenhouse gas emissions, the U.S. ambassador to Canada said on Monday, as the two countries move to harmonize rules on carbon dioxide cuts.

Canada's oil sands, the largest crude reserve outside the Middle East, offer secure energy supplies for the United States. But David Jacobson, appointed as President Barack Obama's envoy to Canada in 2009, said the companies exploiting the resource must take further steps to reduce their environmental impact.

1. So, for those on here who think we should stop drilling in the Gulf of Mexico because of the BP mess, do you really want your oil coming from here? This is a constant, never-ending environmental disaster. The BP disaster is far smaller scale and quite temporary compared to the oil sands in Alberta.

2. For a certain Canadian criticizing the Gulf of Mexico and U.S. policy, would you attack your own country's policies here with similar robustness?

The days when the US Government can order every other Nation to obey what they tell them to do are fast running out.
Obviously if Canada wants to run it's own affairs and disagrees with the 'orders' given by the US, the answer is simple, just refuse to sell the US any Oil.
