Researchers from the University of South Florida have found evidence that oil from the Deepwater Horizon spill is poisoning organisms in a section of the Gulf of Mexico that is a spawning ground for commercially important fish species, the Los Angeles Times reported Wednesday.
A team from the University of South Florida (USF) that is studying the effects of the spill said oil was settling in the sediment in a vital underwater canyon.
The DeSoto Canyon, according to USF oceanographer David Hollander, is an underwater canyon that is the source of nutrient-rich waters for the Continental Shelf. It is also the spawning ground for many of the commercial fish in the Gulf.
