OK, it's time for me to prove that I am not a hypocrite. I often state, when discussing Islam, that more moderate Muslims must speak out against extremists. It is the only way to undo the damage that these extremists do. I consider myself a moderate liberal, and while I don't agree with many of Bush's policies, I am appalled and angered at the agenda these extremist liberals are professing. I have no problem with them speaking their views (free speech and all). Just don't claim that this is the mainstream liberal view.
For the record, here are my views (as a moderate liberal) on the positions stated in 'The World Can't Wait' pdf.
YOUR GOVERNMENT, on the basis of outrageous lies, is waging a murderous and utterly illegitimate war in Iraq, with other countries in their sights.
I support the war in Iraq. Though I think there was much misinformation given to the leadership that led to the war (sorry, there are no legitimate WMD's), I see the war as a preventative strike. If allowed to remain and gain more power, Hussain, eventually would have cause more death and destuction than he did.
YOUR GOVERNMENT is openly torturing people, and justifying it.
I do believe this and am disturbed by it. torture is an ineffective way to gain information. Terrorists who will blow themselves up will endure anything for their cause.
YOUR GOVERNMENT puts people in jail on the merest suspicion, refusing
them lawyers, and either holding them indefinitely or deporting them in the dead of night.
I support profiling. It is a valuable detective tool. My only problem with the above is the refusal of lawyers and other constitutional violations. Questioning suspicious activity or deportation is appropriate.
YOUR GOVERNMENT is moving each day closer to a theocracy, where a narrow and hateful brand of Christian fundamentalism will rule.
I am quite religious (surprise, surprise). I, also, am very anti-religion in government. Though I do see this country moving towards a religious right agenda, I don't see this happening too significantly, as freedon to worship or not to worship seems pretty much in tact. A little more morality isn't a bad thing, IMO, though what that morality is cannot be dictated. This is the one issue, though, that concerns me more than the others.
YOUR GOVERNMENT suppresses the science that doesn’t fit its religious, political and economic agenda, forcing present and future generations to pay a terrible price.
Don't agree. If stem cell research is, specifically, what is being discussed here, though I agree that there needs to be unlimited ability to test, the govenment hasn't eliminated this research, altogether. Just govenmental funding of it . That's OK with me.
YOUR GOVERNMENT is moving to deny women here, and all over the world, the right to birth control and abortion.
Ridiculous. How can the US government impact women in other countries? Birth control is readily available. Abortion is still the law, and though the Bush administration may not support it, I don't see all abortions becoming illegal. It'd be kinda like bringing back Prohibition.
YOUR GOVERNMENT enforces a culture of greed, bigotry, intolerance and ignorance.
What partisan govenment doesn't in it's own way. This is an overgeneralization.
Oh, and the Hitler reference is just absurd.
This is how a non-extremist liberal sees things. Though I disagree with many of Bush's policies (gay marriage, social program cuts, not disagreeing with religion in govenment) I don't see them in the extremist way that these W.C.W people do. These people give liberals a bad name. I hope other moderate liberals will speak up against them, and I hope y'all conservatives will both not refer to all liberals based on these beliefs and will, also, speak up against your own extremists.
BTW, I will be going to work on October 5 (unless I'm sick).
