You could have done great stand-up on the "St. Louis," the 1930s ship carrying Jews refused landing in the US and elsewhere and was sent back to Europe, leading to the deaths of many of its passengers.

But credit is due. Hope the children are looking in. Not often they will get to read in a few spare paragraphs thoughts that suggest ignorance, lawbreaking, heartlessness and bigotry clearly combined so succinctly.

Were they put on an island under American control, they would have been blessed compared to returning to Germany. On the other hand, not a phony story in the bunch - obviously. Heck, even Honduras would have looked like heaven.

“Not a phony story in the bunch”? Guaranteed some people pretended to be Jews at some time in front of presumably sympathetic officials from some governments, others, like modern day smugglers, exploited others’ misery; it’s what happens when people are involved. I worked with refugees for 20 years, investigated civil rights and labor complaints for half that and found a good number of phonies. Sorry this event has introduced you to human failings.

Seriously, we cannot let the holocaust imprison us, prevent us from doing the right thing when faced with (even vastly) numerically lesser tragedies. If we do that, the Nazis will have won.

Except she hasn't. The right loves manufacturing her "gaffes". They're terrified of a young hispanic socialist woman and they're really bad at hiding it.

Do you mind citing any of these "manufactured" gaffes?

Socialist scares me more than Hispanic and the fact that people want to keep making this about her race and not her troubling ideology, is one of the more worrying aspects of this woman's rise to the political scene.
