In the past 30 years if you were in the top 1% economic class your inflation-adjusted incomes grew by 224%. The top 0.1% grew by 390%. In contrast, the bottom 90% struggled with only a 5% growth in incomes.[ref] Whoop-tee-do! A 5% increase over 30 years is pathetic!

According to the Credit Suisse's annual Global Wealth Data Book (When It Comes to the American Dream, the U.S. Ranks 27th in the World - DailyFinance) , America's middle class ranks 27th in the world. Are they serious? I thought the United States was the wealthiest country in the world.

The U.S. misery index (Global Wealth Distribution | The Big Picture) has reached its highest level since May, 1983. I remember the Carter years. The only thing missing today is the 18% interest rates. So how can the index be so high in the Obama years without double-digit interest rates? For starters, I remember having a job back then. Today, a lot of us don't have jobs, 50% of the population receives government checks, the population is aging, and the dollar has plummeted in value.

Blog: Obama's Misery Index Approaches Carter Years

Welcome to Obama's Fundamental Transformation of America.

Importance of the misery index aside, your source is in error and out of date. It references a blog written in 2011 and incorrectly so. The misery index is listed at roughly 13 percent , despite the fact unemployment resides at 7.6 percent and inflation less than 2. Leave it to American Thinker to muck up both chronology and math.

We are reaping the benefits of Reagan's trickle down voodoo economics. Or is Obama's 5 years to blame for the 30 years that began with Reagan's 'transformation'?

Don't bother answering, you don't have the wherewithal - this post isn't about racism (your specialty and obsession)

Wait is Wehrwolfen serious? I just spent the afternoon being told 'progressives' hate, envy and want to destroy the wealthy and now this guy claims somehow the 'socialist' Obama is enriching the top 1%??? Has this been a 30 year E-Vile plot by the liberals??? (I think he got the parties mixed-up)

So Wehrwolfen had a job back in May 1983... he was a lucky duck for sure. The unemployment rate was 10.8% at the close of 1982. States like West Virginia, Michigan, Alabama had 16-15% unemployment. In the spring of 1983 30 states had double digit unemployment, West Virginia hit 20%. Wish I knew how to wiki link.

Far more than 50% get government checks- from farmer's subsidy checks to tax refunds most of we gets checks. It is a bit of a stretch to call a SNAP card much more than a stipend. but it helps the 'conservative; whine....

I do believe Wehrwolfen has an extremely selective memory.

That's how the tea partiers work. Since they post from a totally fact-free zone (TFZ), they can say in one post that Obama is a Marxist and in the next that he's a Wall Street Insider. Facts and words mean nothing to conservatives. It's all talking points all the time. They don't even care if they contradict each other.

Thank you for attributing Bob Campbell's OP-Ed article to me. But all I did was to partially post it here. Strange as it may seem, I was amongst the 10.8% unemployed from 1980 to 1983. I worked all sorts of jobs I could get my hands on. From moving furniture, construction, car mechanic, to working as a bouncer. But hey, I didn't go on food stamps, unemployment lines, or welfare. I did eventually become employed in full time job. But that's another story. I adapted, persevered and overcame the times.
You complain about Farmer subsidies, ever work on farm? But you accept Food Stamps, Welfare checks, Obama phones, 99 week unemployment checks, and "Pigford" payoffs.

You claim I have a selective memory? I may be a septuagenarian but I haven't lost my marbles yet. I see the world exactly as it is and it doesn't look pretty for America's future.

Last thing first, some confuse their own demise with that of the nation, it does seem that many sad old men are sure the end is nigh for our nation as their own end is close at hand.

You are a bit confused or at least confusing- you claim to have been both unemployed and able to find quite a few jobs back in the 80's. But now claim many can't find work now... are you saying these days workers are not as ahhh determined as you? It reminds me of the stories old guys would tell when I was young- how they walked 5 miles in blizzards to and from school with the wolves circling- and it was uphill each way!

If you read my profile you would have your answer about me and a farm. yes I have worked on a farm, well a ranch...MY FREAKIN ranch I built from nothing so tuck your 'work ethic' back in, at your age it isnt as impressive as it once was... ;)

What I do note is Obama phones started as BushII phones, his administration studied and created the program. this unemployment period dwarfed the 80 recession, I was there for that one as well. Welfare and food stamps for today's working poor are not bad, but a sign of how far the working poor have slipped in relation to in the 80's.

Take comfort in a line some of my Army buds use- "We were winning when when I left!"

Try and find some peace in these your 'golden years'.... :peace

You are right, Obama does tend to make old white guys really miserable. That is probably his best quality. of course, many of them are old and miserable anyway and hate those young kids for not living how they want them to. What you are going through is a product of old age. many elderly people tend to grow bitter and hateful of the world. It is probably partly due to the realization that your time is over and now a new generation gets to rule the world while you wait impatiently for the next. Of course, you disapprove of all of their youthful ideas like not killing gays, blacks, hispanics, irish, muslims, italians, germans, asians, and whatever other groups you hated when you were young because they screwed up the world.

We do understand, your kids do not visit you enough, and the pudding was warm today so you need to complain and blame someone. Someone left the faux news on a bit to long in the community room, and now you are like a teenager who knows everything, yet knows nothing. The best advice for you is to tuern off the fix noise, they are only there to get you all worked up, and go play some canasta or something while thinking about the reality your kids do not visit you because you keep yelling at them every visit and are hard to talk to in a pleasant conversation because you want to blame someone for your misery. Yers, your misery index is high, and it seems to have a lot to do with how you fail to live what is left of your life. You want to justify that by pretending everyone else is as bitter and miserable as you while many people are out there enjoying the life they do have without being old and bitter. Just pop your pills and realize it is your fault you are miserable and take some responsibility for yourself instead of blaming Obama who really doesn't even know you or care very much if you live or die.
