Obama announces Africa electricity initiative.....

A large protest group rallies on the streets as they march to the U.S. Embassy in Pretoria, South Arfica, in protest of US President Barack Obama's visit to South Africa on June 28, 2013

CAPE TOWN, South Africa, June 30 (UPI) -- The United States will chip in $7 billion for an ambitious project to bring electricity to more far-flung areas of Africa, President Obama said Sunday.

Obama's plan would lay out $7 billion over five years. Most of the aid will come in the form of assistance with industry best-practices, insurance and technical advice for energy development. Alternative energy sources such as solar and hydropower along with traditional oil and natural gas will be used to increase generation in the region by an additional 10,000 megawatts.

Power Africa includes six African nations -- Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, and Tanzania – and will also work with Mozambique and Uganda on petroleum development, the White House said.

Imagine that  .....here Obama runs around our Country talking about our failing infrastructure yet will go and take 7 BILLION, that's Right 7 Billion. Not Million and hand the money over to what he is calling Power Africa. Sequester Cuts be damn. Anyone else seeing something wrong with this.

What do those liberals and Progressives have to say now? Still thinking your man is looking out for your best interests? This fool throws money terms round like what he is giving away is nothing more than mere pennies. He continually keeps screwing up in the world where the Big Boyz play. This is a sure sign that he does not belong out playing where those big boys play. He just doesn't have what it takes to wear the Big Boyz Pants. Time for even his own people to step up and tell him.....What happened to taking care of our own Infrastructure? Did ya take ya eye off the ball again?

Just where does this moron think we have the money to waste on others at this point in time?

First, I wonder just how the President has the authority to do that. Secondly, WTF is he thinking? I just don't understand it. Are we a bottomless pit of money? I just don't understand it.

Guess this really was a *goodwill* tour. Say THANKS Africa!

Loser

Hiya Maggie :2wave: .....plus look at all the Money to Egypt. What a waste of time that is! The he gave Drones to guess who.....Kenya. Which now their leader has been charged with War Crimes. Then he helped the French out with our resources so they could fight in Mali. Then there is the money he is giving to the TNC inside Libya. Plus the Money he gave back last year for Food in Africa. Which don't count Syria and any in the ME. Yet he wants to fix our infrastructure Right?

Also take note Obama pushing that Petroleum Agenda too. For Uganda and Mozambique. Yet he wants to try and bring them Solar and gas too. They can't even get the crap working here let alone talking about putting it up anywhere else.

To top it off Maggie.....he then visited Mandela's family. Telling them his Daughters would carry on the tradition and the responsibility of being Citizens of the World. WTF happened to being Citizens of the US. Seems he is more concerned about being a citizen of the World.

Never have I saw a President harp so much about being a Citizen of the World over that of being a Citizen of his own Country. I got a message for him.....he don't like it here. Then get the **** out!!!!!

So, they're protesting him, and he's throwing money at them?

Is that somehow different from his normal behavior?

It's just taxpayer money, anyway. Go ahead, flush it down the toilet. Maybe someone will be grateful to good old uncle Sammy, money supplier to the world.

Just look at how much the Egyptians love us since we've been giving them goodies like fighter jets and the like.

Heya DH. :2wave: Then there is all that talk about our Infrastructure. Do you see anything getting done? Then the Sequester Cuts.....and he still continues to act as if he playing with pennies and nickels.

Yep and they protested him. :doh

7 Billion!!!!!

We don't even take care of our own people, and this Administration wants to send $7 billion for electricity expansion? Not even healthcare or food, but electricity......

It's enough to sour one's stomach.....

Heya GG. :2wave: Well last year he sent that money for Food. Then for HIV. Now this.....even knowing that early this week he was talking to some of these African Countries about Gay Rights. Despite them being Muslim and having laws criminalizing homosexuality.

Power Africa he calls it.....how about Power America. As in fix our **** first! :doh

Here is a summary of foreign aid given away since 2001.

It's not enough to break the bank, but it certainly is significant.

I could see giving food to North Korea, for example, if it could simply be dropped from aircraft so the people could get it. Giving away military hardware to countries that are unstable, or that are anti west, makes no sense to me at all.

We're like the unpopular rich kid at school trying to buy friends.

Come to think of it, I kind of like the idea of flying bombers over NK, dropping not bombs, but food packages along with pictures of how their brothers in SK are living, and perhaps a note: "We could have bombed you, and there wouldn't be a thing you could have done about it."

A while back a small county barely a 4th world country obscure and forgotten imploded... and on September 11 2001 the aftermath reached us and shook us in our foundations, rage and panic pursuit. 12 years later and still engaged in two wars, trillions spent thousands upon thousands dead, 50,000+ injured and maimed and we still are feeling its aftermath.

Where would we be and what would we do if a continent like Africa implodes?

Is there anyone anywhere who will dare to defend this obscene behavior? Where are all the Obama supporters now?

There has to be a great deal of Buyer's Remorse floating around the country.

Heya DM. :2wave: Funny thing.....G.E. has already given like 9 billion to these countries.

The other thing I found Odd was this part here.....

Most of the aid will come in the form of assistance with industry best-practices, insurance and technical advice for energy development.....snip~

7 billion to come up with industry best practices? Insurance?

With any luck, it won't get past the House.

If they were actually building something, then Maybe, but this is for technical advice (from whom), insurance (covering what and who). Sounds like more giveaways to his friends in Energy. They used up all the other money he gave away and now they want African vacations?

That's really what is driving the idea of giving away money to South Africa. The industry is the real recipient of the money, which it uses to give the government of SA technical advice and assist them with industry best practices. Whether any of that will result in villages actually getting electricity is quite another matter.

From CNN.....and It only gets worse. They say Africa for these Countries will need 300 Billion. :doh Well, they best start cashing in all their gold and diamonds. 300 Billion.

U.S. President Barack Obama pledged $7 billion Sunday to help combat frequent power blackouts in sub-Saharan Africa.

The program includes $1.5 billion from the U.S. Overseas Private Investment Corporation and $5 billion from the Export-Import Bank, the White House said. Sub-Saharan Africa will need more than $300 billion to achieve universal electricity access by 2030, it said.

The preliminary setup will include Ethiopia, Kenya, Liberia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Mozambique.

I'd be willing to bet that we could throw 300B at the problem, and the Africans still wouldn't have reliable electricity.

*sigh*

Foreign aid is a very small slice of federal spending. The total federal budget for 2013, before sequestration, was $3.8 trillion. A $7 billion commitment, spread over 5 years, is $1.4 billion.

$1.4 billion sounds like a huge amount of money, and to an individual it is enormous. In reality, it's 0.04% of annual federal spending. It's not even a drop in the bucket.

I really don't see how this is an awful thing. It builds good will, which we're going to need as we compete with China and India for African resources and markets. It's also beneficial on a basic humanitarian level. The key concern at this point really ought to be making sure the program is executed well.

Why is that surprising?

We're talking about roughly 600 million people, over 20 million square kilometers. Many areas are not yet developed or cultivated.

Nor is there any suggestion that the US, and the US alone, intends to foot the bill for this.

"Oh".....you mean like Egypt.

Yeah ... how come places Obama decided to make regime changes (Libya & Egypt) turned out so crappy yet the media hasn't covered it that way.
(that was a rhetorical question)

Is there anyone anywhere who will dare to defend this obscene behavior?
It's not "obscene." It's barely a dent in the foreign aid budget, let alone federal budget.

Foreign aid is not particularly popular, no matter who is promoting it. And yet, the American public pretty much wants the world to bend over backwards to accomodate American interests, businesses, tourists and political demands. Go figure.

There has to be a great deal of Buyer's Remorse floating around the country.
Or not.

His approval ratings are in the same general range as during most of his time in office. And in case you missed it, he just got re-elected late last year....

With GE already giving money looks like we will be giving the most of it.....course those Petroleum Programs will give us the Edge. Including all that Red Tape paperwork we will charge for.

Oh you meant his approval rating if he is liked. As most of the others. He isn't doing so well on. Were you looking to spin in it in some other way.?
