WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Barack Obama on Tuesday proposed overhauling the tax code to lower taxes for the poor and middle class, increase them for the rich and make it so most Americans can file their taxes in five minutes.

Obama tax plan: $80 billion in cuts, five-minute filings - CNN.com

The public gives the Obama administration little credit for its tax cuts, which according to the Washington-based Tax Policy Center lowered federal income taxes for 93 percent of filers. Asked to compare their federal income taxes to what they paid during George W. Bush's presidency, only 7 percent say they are lower; 20 percent say their taxes are higher and 65 percent say they are about the same.

No they aren't all ignorant. Some of the yes, most probably not. And where were the Tea Party mentioned in either article?

This guy is just a left wing hack nothing more. BTW, "the Dane" you can drop the pretense now. No one believes for a second you are "centrist"

@ The Dane -- Did you happen to notice that your link refers to something he said in 2007? Where's the beef??

And as to increasing them for the rich, until we close the deduction loopholes for the really rich, it doesn't matter. For every tax increase, there's a loophole around it.

And as to 65% saying they're about the same . . . I'd venture a guess that, off the tops of their heads, most people would have absolutely no idea.

And as to filing their taxes in five minutes, with our present system, that's going to be impossible.

What a bunch of political propaganda -- by Obama, not you.

The point is that he said he was going to lower taxes and he did. The tea parties entire premise is lower taxes and protecting the constitution. Since Obama is a constitutional scholar and wouldn't dream of defying it (which is why he is pro 2nd amendment), the only issue remaining is lowering taxes, which he has done for every single racist ignorant tea party member.

Despite the frequent cries of American Republicans that Barack Obama is trying to bring European-style socialism to the United States, it is now very clear that the US president wishes to govern from one place and one place only: the center.

Why should I remove a centrist title when I support a centrist president.

I would choose your words wisely when you dance with me or I'll wipe the floor with you.

@ The Dane -- I'm having difficulty locating those cuts. Do you have a good link?

See this is what we're talking about. Peoples' taxes went down and most of them aren't even aware of it.

More proof that the tea parties are irrelevant and ignorant

You wish.

They are not socially irrelevant, they clearly pay a valuable roll in pointing out the fact that many Americans have sub par intelligence.

How do you like the prices of cigerettes? Just because Obama takes a few pictures of him smoking a cigerette and saying he wants to quit he can hike the sin tax up? Watering down the peoples money with bailouts and creating sin taxes must be takin into account also and juxtaposed next to anything cut.

Should we also count the tax on stupidity then? Better known as the lottery?

What we're talking about in a tax system that's so darned complicated nobody can really TELL if taxes are cut. Tax credits, "if you're doing this you get that" credits, expanded deductions. One shouldn't have to be a Philadelphia Lawyer to figure out #1 how to fill out their taxes and #2 whether or not they're paying more or less. Sending people checks in the mail is a ridiculous way to effect tax cuts. JMVHO.

Welcome to bizzaro world people. Under the new "health reform" bill people's benefits packages may be taxed as income, as well anything that has an FDA number is subject to tax(including, but not limited to OTC/BPO medicines, medical devices, and toothbrushes). Cap and Trade is back on the table, the Bush tax cuts are being allowed to sunset, I.R.S. powers have been increased, the death tax is being reinstated in 2011, and there have been internet usage taxes proposed as well as a newly instituted tanning bed tax.............

But taxes are not going up.

@ Midnight -- I think it's only fair that employees' healthcare benefits are taxable. Until people who pay their own healthcare are allowed to deduct their healthcare premiums right off the top, not subject to "Oh, you have to pay a certain % of your income before they're deductible, it's very unfair treatment.

FY2009 and 2010 had the same tax brackets and levels that 2008 had.
A credit was (for most households) applied to your 2009 return. $400, or $800 for married joint-filers. I think the same will be done in 2010, but I'm not certain of that.
A full third of the stimulus spending was tax cuts of various forms, many of which help small business owners.

If you had somebody else do your taxes for you, it's not hard to see how you would miss this. The tax accountant guys would be handling it and might not even bother to mention it since it's relatively small and shows up on everyone's return.

Edit: Actually, it was adjusted on the employer withholding end, it turns out. So it's even easier for someone to be unaware that it even happened.

Uhh no.

Taxes are going up for everyone who pays taxes.
The Bush tax cuts are expiring next year, which raises the tax rates on everyone.

Media Matters ≠ Facts

You didn't even read the link did you?

Nobody claimed that no taxes are going up.

I rest my case.

LOL You could'nt wipe the floor if I handed you a mop and bucket.

Well, I think this is a good post -- letting some people know they're taxes went down. A lot of the tax credits to 'special interests', (and by that I mean, families with children, yada yada yada) are what make "the rest of us" nuts, though.

What your thread has pointed out, to me, is that our tax system needs a complete overhaul. Like throw it in the garbage and start over overhaul. (Like that's news. But Obama's 5-Minutes-To-File proclamation is a joke. 2009 Income Tax Instruction Booklet: 102 pages.
