Obama Says Orlando Shooter Was ‘Homegrown’ Terrorist

Well, I'd say that's correct, in so far as "homegrown terrorist" is typically a synonym for "domestic terrorist", which is what he is. It simply is a case of domestic Islamic terrorism, that was motivated by a foreign entity (ISIS).

Pretty much this. Second Generation Muslim Immigrants have a real problem in their community. The kids grow up feeling alienated from society, and so they idealize instead the culture that their parents fled in order to criticize their own.

While technically true, it does ignore the larger picture: this "homegrown terrorist" acted to advance the agenda of a foreign power, namely ISIS. If he had been a fundie xtian just wanting to kill gays, that would more completely be described as a "homegrown" or "domestic" terrorist in that no foreign power's policies are being directly advanced. This perp directly and unambiguously credited ISIS for his actions, which is treason. In the posited theoretical fundie xtian scenario, while it would still be horrific, it wouldn't be treason.

a big step is to take down the jihadi sites they go to

Someone suggested we put those Jihadist sites on the same level as child porn. If it's on your computer/phone, you are busted.

a big step is to take down the jihadi sites they go to

Good luck with that, if you think that is practical you do not understand how the internet works.

The scumbag killed 49 of our people with more clinging to life in the hospital and for some reason we find it necessary to discuss his title? This accomplishes what exactly?

a big step is to take down the jihadi sites they go to

That's a losing battle.

Technically, it is trivial to move a web site from jurisdiction to jurisdiction. It took them years to the shut down The Pirate Bay, and there are still hundreds of mirrors of that site up all over the world.

Ethically, shutting down sites based on the ideas they express makes us hypocrites.

It also lends credence to their positions. If they are such dangerous ideas we need to suppress them, they must have teeth, right?

My own solution involves universal mental health screenings to try to intervene in these people's development before adulthood.

The problem is self-radicalization. It cannot be stopped. How do we stop someone from thinking a certain way?

By setting CP moderators on them?

YES!

Yep.

Well stated!

You can't! Short of a Mind Meld .....

a big step is to take down the jihadi sites they go to

That's one step for sure.

These are exactly the second and third generation Muslims we need to keep an eye on.

His father showed no emotion in that interview. Wouldn't trust him for anything.

Ditto!

Yep...

Besides, isn't the US losing controll of the internet?

He's just a scumbag to me, I don't care what obozo calls him.

That's a losing battle.

Try getting into Muslim families to accomplish that.

Yeah, right. We'd have to invent the Great Firewall of China, only 10x larger and more complex, so that's not a solution.

Taken down the source, do you have any idea how many sites hosting copyrighted files have been taken down, only to spring up in a dozen more sites. It truly is the hydra.

"The Net interprets censorship as damage and routes around it."
John Gilmore As quoted in TIME magazine (6 December 1993)

Basically meaning the packets will always get through.

Good luck with that, if you think that is practical you do not understand how the internet works.

Exactly part of the problem. Lack of fundamental knowledge about how this work, especially so in government.

Besides, isn't the US losing controll of the internet?

At this point, they could actively attempt to destroy the Internet, and the community could rebuild it and lock out the governments. It'd be a pain, but the technology allows for that.

Try getting into Muslim families to accomplish that.

That's why it being universal would be key. I don't like the idea of tying it to civil rights or employment, but some sort of (preferably positive) incentive to participate would be needed, especially early on, since there is such a stigma attached to mental health issues.

The key is that a professional would have a shot at evaluating people at the crucial development points, and help the ones that are struggling before they lash out. Expensive and difficult, but the only effective solution I can come up with.

ISIS has promised to infiltrate the USA by recruiting Muslim people within the USA. I find it hard to believe that Mateen is truly homegrown since he has been anti American since before 9/11, and his own father has voiced support for the Taliban since before the kid was pre-puberty. Mateen's father never did assimilate to American culture and has demonstrated this openly.

Actually his father was a supporter of the Mujahidin.

you are correct my understanding of the internet is limited. I guess what we need is a politician with some balls first.
