This had always been discouraged in the past because of the addictive nature of Opiates. Perhaps Big Pharma at the CORPORATE level has rented enough politicians to expand its' business in this manner. Perhaps if we remove our troops the Taliban will get Opium production back to the 272 ton per year level and that could hurt Big CORPORATE, or not? There are many natural resources in Afghanistan and if you don't control the ground, you won't get the Natural Resources. You understand, I'm sure, like our Oil under that Iraqi and Libyan and Syrian sand. Don't forget the pipelines while you have the old cerebellum in high gear. This couldn't be more Imperialism and resource acquisition for USA Big Corporate, or could it?

FYI the Taliban are already there and have control of large swaths of the area. Our backing of regional warlords has not made the situation any better so how does staying there change anything?

Taliban won't be able to retake power if we stay.

The Taliban can sit out in the boonies until the sun dies out for all I care. As long as they don't control the country, it's a win.

The funny thing is that the Taliban, who you claimed discouraged opium growing, have been running what amounts to a protection racket protecting said opium fields for several years. The US has been in control of the country, it's true; but the US isn't all seeing. The Taliban easily was able to covertly process their poison of choice covertly.

Afghanistan is one of the most remote countries on the planet. Lots of places to hide.

Not even going into the "it's all about the oil" shtick. I've pointed out that we don't even get most of our oil from the ME, and we have a gas station masquerading as a country, aka Saudi Arabia, to hook us up.

disappointing. getting our troops out of that region is one thing that he could have done even with a hostile congress. my guess is that the US is in for expanded war in the Middle East regardless of who wins.

First you pretend that the US has some great control over the whole of Afghanistan. Simply untrue. I have been there, have you. Besides the US government controls all of the US. How many tons of drugs do you think are both grown and brought into this country illegally every year.
Next you claim the CIA is dealing drugs to fund operations which is a vast exaggeration of the truth.
Finally how about you tell us just how much oil the US is getting from Iraq or Syria.

We're talking about 272 tons produced in 2002 by the Taliban controlled Nation.
We're talking about 11,000 tons produced in 2015 by the USA controlled Nation.
It was the CIA that funded, armed and trained al Qeda in Afghanistan in the 80s.
Oliver North's Congressional testimony documented CIA authorized self funding, autonomous drug dealing to fund covert operations.
That would be just four lovely facts you can address, unless we're going to get more gasballs.
