With 92% public support for extending background checks for all gun sales, those that oppose it in the House, do so at their own political risk. When have we ever seen this strong public support for anything?
Then we something that does keep them from having guns. Here's a primer for you: Crazy guy gets an idea in his head to shoot up a McDonald's, so he goes to buy a gun and then kills 20 people because the voices in his head tell him to. Or, background checks turn up that he was just released from the mental ward where he was hospitalized for schizophrenia, and he can't buy it. Not legally at least. Murder laws don't deter murderers, but that doesn't mean we make murder legal.

under Lopez I doubt the interstate commerce nexus would be found to exist to make someone register a gun they have owned for decades.I don't see how the Commerce Clause could possibly enable universal background checks. That seems like something that would have to be done at the state level. Even as expanded as the Commerce Clause has become, I don't see a argument that would cover all private sales between parties in the same state.
If such a bill went through, would anything be off limits for congress?

the only way to enforce that is complete gun registration which requires destruction of the fourth amendment
ask people if they support unannounced searches in the middle of the night or jailing a father for giving his adult son or wife a gun without having a BGC done
Best thing Obama could do for the country is to get his PGA card and leave governing the country to the adults.

Well, if you have information as to who they are and where to find them maybe you should pass on that info.
We have had a federal law requiring background checks for licensed dealers across state lines since 1994.
Licensed dealers are involved in interstate commerce, the average Joe selling a gun to his friend is not. Why do you think the 1994 bill wasn't universal?
Right, that has been our experience since federal background checks became law in 1994!
I've read that it is proposed to require background checks at gun shows and internet sales, but I've not seen any proposals to prevent a friend from selling to a friend. Link to this proposal please?
WTF do you think "UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECK" means?

OBAMA: But it’s hard to enforce that law, when as many as 40 percent of all gun purchases are conducted without a background check. That’s not safe. That’s not smart. That’s not fair to responsible gun buyers or sellers.
If you want to buy a gun, whether it’s from a licensed dealer, or a private seller, you should at least have to show you are not a felon or somebody legally prohibited from buying one.
They said one was incarcerated by a neighbor but clearly did nothing to obtain him did they - guess they didn't try very hard. But then you'd never
hold them accountable for that anyway because dead American's don't matter to you only BHO's popularity is important.
you lost me on that one
Is it just easier to read what you want, or what?
President Obama’s remarks on new gun control actions, Jan. 16, 2013 (Transcript) - The Washington Post
I'm pretty sure a friend would be considered a private seller.
Private sellers at gun shows and internet sales are all I have seen, and obviously, all you have seen as well.
Did you read my post? Obama said private sellers, that means all of them. If it doesn't then it would be useless as it would only cover half of the "loophole". Also the term "Universal Background Check" kinda implies that it would be, you know, universal...
Here is the definition of universal: of, affecting, or done by all people or things in the world or in a particular group; applicable to all
