President Obama says, ‘I’d think about changing’ name of Washington Redskins

It was supposed to be the last word: Never!
But the decades-long argument over the name of Washington’s football team, the Redskins, has only grown louder since owner Daniel M. Snyder vowed in May he would never — “you can use caps” — change it.

The newest voice emerged Saturday: President Obama.

“If I were the owner of the team and I knew that there was a name of my team — even if it had a storied history — that was offending a sizeable group of people, I’d think about changing it,” Obama said in an interview published by the Associated Press on Saturday.

Obama is only the latest to weigh in. Prominent sports journalists have announced they will refrain from using the name. A Native American tribe in New York has launched a national ad campaign. On Monday, it will hold a public conference near the Washington hotel where National Football League owners are meeting. And, in a move that has been described as potentially more significant than any lawsuit or legislation — both of which are also in the works — a group led by a former Federal Communications Commission chairman is working to persuade broadcasters to stop saying the name on the airwaves.

But the willingness of the president, the nation’s most influential sports fan, to weigh in has raised the protracted debate to a new level of prominence.....snip~

Be alright if we had a President that was into all kinds of Sports. Then I could go for that. What do you think? Should Obama be weighing in on this and trying to bring this issue into the Political World of PC?

Obama was asked about the issue, he responded in a purely hypothetical way. So what? And who says he's not "into all kinds of sports"? He goes to baseball and basketball games fairly often, and conservatives have a bird every year when ESPN puts his NCAA Tournament bracket on TV. Obama is just as qualified to comment on the issue as any other president.

Oh, and he also said "I'd think about changing it." Not "I'd change it." But way to misrepresent his quote in the thread title. The fact that people are actually flaming him over this just shows how crazy Obama Derangement Syndrome has become.

I think anybody who owns the team should "think about" it. It's a patently racist term. If there were a team called the Philadelphia N*ggers or the Chicago Jews or the San Francisco Chinamen, people would throw a fit. Why does "Redskins" get a pass?

I say he is not into all Sports.....just like some other Presidents we have had. Moreover all Presidents go to baseball games. Doesn't mean they are into the Sport. Like we can tell he is with all those remarks and as a fan talking about baseball. Same deal with Hockey. Same deal with Soccer. Then there is football.....which he says he is fan of Da Bears and of course basketball. Pretty much what he is into......Oh and now Golf since he don't have to pay for it.

As to responding in a purely hypothetical way.....not even close. Obama has known about the Issue with the Journalists and the Group with the FCC. Note in the video this was deliberate to get Obama to weigh in.

If he says he would think of changing the name.....then he would be about changing the name. Otherwise there would be no reason to say anything. If he was against it or indifferent to the issue. Be that simple.....to come down without giving an answer like most politicians do. So nice try with the play on the semantics and the use of terminology. Kinda like they did in the Virginia Debates.

Obama isn't a football fan. You may remember when Obama demanded the national airways to give a speech at the same time of the NFL opening game kick off was suppose to take place a couple of years ago. Remember ?

Obama saying " that was offending a sizable group of people" is just another Obama lie. How would Obama know ? Has he ever lived on the "REZ" I have. Has he even put a foot on an Indian Reservation ?

The vast majority of Native Americans could care less about sports teams identifying with Native Americans. They are more concerned about jobs that aren't on the rez or for the lucky tribes who have casinos, they are more concerned with their casino royalty payments.

The only Native Americans who are making a fuss is a small minority of teens and those in their twenties who haven't grown up yet and are part of the AIM (American Indian Movement.) It's a phase that a small minority of young Native Americans go through. Eventually they stop dreaming and open their eyes and become productive members of the tribe.

Liberals and so called progressives will milk this issue for what it's worth to divide and gain votes to further their radical agenda they have planned for you and I.

I would say the biggest post WW ll pro sports Presidents were Richard M. Nixon, Ronald Reagan and G.W. Bush.

But Nixon was the biggest NFL football fan of them all.

Remember when NFL home games were blacked out on television ? I remember like all NFL fans back then. It was President Nixon who ended that NFL practice of blacking out home games. That's what Presidents are suppose to do for the people, not to stop veterans from visiting war memorials to honor their buddies who didn't come home.

I am not sure how to take your comment.

Are you saying every Native American has said he is offended by the name? I haven't heard a sizeable amount of people saying anything about this subject, and if you look for it I think you can find many Native Americans saying they have no problem with the name.
