Obama honors Nobel winner with statement about himself
There was an extraordinary scene at the awarding of the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo Friday morning. The prize went to imprisoned Chinese dissident Liu Xiaobo, who was barred by the Chinese government from attending the ceremony. It was the first time since 1935 -- when the prize went to a winner imprisoned in one of Adolf Hitler's concentration camps -- that the Peace Prize winner or his repesentative did not appear personally to accept the award.* Liu's absence was symbolized by an empty chair on stage.
So on this notable occasion, the White House released a statement from President Obama on the awarding of the prize to Liu in absentia. And this is how Obama's statement began:
One year ago, I was humbled to receive the Nobel Peace Prize -- an award that speaks to our highest aspirations, and that has been claimed by giants of history and courageous advocates who have sacrificed for freedom and justice.

You would think that this man wouldn't be so arrogant, (yes arrogant) about his pre-emptive peace prize when faced with someone imprisoned for thier work......
much ado about nothing rev.
much ado about nothing rev.
Then feel free NOT to post then....
True, it's not an issue at all, it's more of an insight into the man running my country. Hardly as serious as something like Palin getting a reality show. :ssst:
most people use their personal experiences in speeches or even in everyday conversation. if this what you use to form your opinion of obama, i would love for you to tell me how you feel all other politicians who do exactly the same thing.
Come on, you have to admit it's at least a little arrogant to start off a statement which is supposed to be congratulating someone else, by talking about yourself.
a little arrogant? yes, but again, this article is the work of someone with too much time on their hands.

Mr. Liu Xiaobo is far more deserving of this award than I was.

c'mon rev, this thread misrepresentation is weak, even for youAll of us have a responsibility to build a just peace that recognizes the inherent rights and dignity of human beings – a truth upheld within the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. In our own lives, our own countries, and in the world, the pursuit of a just peace remains incomplete, even as we strive for progress. This past year saw the release of Nobel Laureate Aung San Suu Kyi, even as the Burmese people continue to be denied the democracy that they deserve. Nobel Laureate Jose Ramos Horta has continued his tireless work to build a free and prosperous East Timor, having made the transition from dissident to President. And this past year saw the retirement of Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu, whose own career demonstrates the universal power of freedom and justice to overcome extraordinary obstacles.
The rights of human beings are universal – they do not belong to one nation, region or faith. America respects the unique culture and traditions of different countries. We respect China’s extraordinary accomplishment in lifting millions out of poverty, and believe that human rights include the dignity that comes with freedom from want. But Mr. Liu reminds us that human dignity also depends upon the advance of democracy, open society, and the rule of law. The values he espouses are universal, his struggle is peaceful, and he should be released as soon as possible. I regret that Mr. Liu and his wife were denied the opportunity to attend the ceremony that Michelle and I attended last year. Today, on what is also International Human Rights Day, we should redouble our efforts to advance universal values for all human beings.

Honestly, I've never heard anyone refer to himself as much as Obama does.
The remarks of President Obama were perfectly appropriate in every way. This is just the typical knee jerk critical reaction from the far right against anything Obama does. If our President walked across the Potomac river to Virginia skimming the tops of the water, some here and in the Republican Party would criticize him for not swimming. That is the sad hyper-partisan reality that we live in thanks to the Party of No and the disease of far right ideology.
SO you think he is deserving AT ALL of the award?
wrong again
let's look at the very next line of his speech:
to me, that is self depricating, rather than boastfulness
here is the text from whitehouse.gov:[emphasis added by bubba]

that's not the thread topic ... the one YOU fashioned
when nailed for misrepresenting Obama's self deprication as arrogance ... by truncating his speech ... you now want to deflect toward another discussion
rev, this misrepresented thread speaks to your character ... and not in a favorable way
As I said.. having the anecdote in there is fine, and I have no problem with the wording... however, STARTING off with it is arrogant. It belonged a little further in, after talking solely about the current recipient and his situation. By talking about himself first (even adding the 'but he is much more deserving' line), it shows arrogance.
Would you like to wager a platnium donation on that buddy? I'll bet you I can show you several threads where I praised obama for doing the right thing.....
Will you be putting your money where your mouth is, champ?
1) we were ordered by mods not to wager here... if you want to get banned, its more than fine with me that you pursue a line of inquiry that you know damn well you were forbidden to engage in.
2) the fact that you or any other right wing extremist has had positive things to say about Obama in no way negates the knee jerk reaction that you yourself have demonstrated in this very thread.

Wagering for donations has never been an issue. I'll take your waffling and excusemaking as a concession. The Good Reverend Appreciates that.
You can take it as a suppository for all I care. The self imposed delusions of your own mind are of no concern of mine.
