Obama, Cuba, and Us

by The Editors February 19, 2016

President Obama has announced that he will visit Cuba next month. This is a natural follow-on from his rapprochement with the Castro regime after our midterm elections in 2014.

In April of the next year, Obama said, “After the midterm elections, my advisers asked me, ‘Mr. President, do you have a bucket list?’ And I said, ‘Well, I have something that rhymes with “bucket list.”’” Exactly.

An opening to the Castro dictatorship was neither urgent nor necessary nor in the American interest. Obama simply wanted to do it. It was on his list. The dictatorship had been dreaming about this kind of rapprochement for well over half a century. So had the American Left.

Previous administrations had offered linkage: favors from Washington in exchange for liberalization in Cuba. Obama had next to no interest in linkage. He offered his favor to the Castros essentially for free.

Since the Obama opening, they have cracked down all the harder on democrats and dissidents. Oscar Biscet, the Cuban democracy leader, said, “I feel as though I have been abandoned on the battlefield.” Berta Soler, another democracy leader — the leader of the Ladies in White — said, “The European Union, the U.S.A., Pope Francis — they have turned their backs on us.” She also said that Obama had given “a green light to the Cuban government to crush civil society.”

Obama trip to Cuba is a sell out to the Castroit tyrannical regime. A year ago Obama said that he would visit Cuba if the human rights “significantly improve”, and meetings with the dissidents were part of the agenda. The regime has not made any progress on human rights, civil liberties and access to the internet. Obama is treating the dissident in Cuba in the same way he treated the dissident in Iran, with contempt and disrespect. This rapprochement with the Castroit regime form part of his legacy, like the Iran deal, regardless of the consequences. He make enemies of our friends and tries to make friends with our enemies.

Pretty lame to be worrying about the likes of Cuba.

Are you okay with the US having relations with Saudi Arabia and China?

Cuba is an enemy who has given up NOTHING to get money into their coffers. Same with Iran. I call it the "Obama Specialty". Enriching our enemies while receiving jack sh#t in return.

you need to get a grip, it is freakin Cuba.

I agree that the communist/socialist government of Cuba is a tyrannical dictatorship with little or zero respect for human life and dignity.

However, closing down borders and banning movement of people, goods, services, and tourism does nothing to change their government. All it does is: 1) punishes Cuban people, 2) hurts American businessmen and tourists, and 3) gives ammunition to Cuban dictators to "prove" that the U.S. is an imperialist bully.

A far better approach would be to follow the George Washington approach of "peace and honest commerce with all nations, entangling alliances with none." And be a good example: demonstrate how much better things are when trade, commerce, and travel with your next-door neighbor is welcomed.

An even better approach would be for us to annex Cuba as a territory. We could allow the Castros to keep the money they have amassed and let them retire in Uruguay. We could allow the Cubans to bring themselves up by the bootstraps at no cost to us. We would simply give them the freedom to do it.

Oh FFS...

We've got more to fear from the next damn thunderstorm than we do from anything at all regarding Cuba.

In fact, I'd be far more afraid of a Sharknado than Cuba.

Good lord....this country really has turned into a bunch of panty-wasted 'fraidy-cats.

Who said anybody was scared of Cube. it is a human right issue. They also shouldn't expect anything until they are willing to return the property stolen from Americans when Castro took over.

Ummm how do you think annexation works, exactly?

We ask the Cuban people if they would prefer to have a situation similar to the Puerto Ricans and if they want it we have a very aggressive talk with the Castros. How do you think it works?

Oh please...

Cuba = fear

That's it. It's been brainwashed into us for decades.

We should be far more at ease dealing with Cuba than we are dealing with China and Saudi Arabia....

how sophomoric

how exactly do you do " honest commerce" with a regime that literally stole all foreign owned property, completely negated all private property rights, and dramatically increased taxes in all imports from the US?... not too mention directly supporting our primary enemy in the world ( USSR) in word and deed.

the sensible reaction to all of that is to say " ok, **** you... we're done... you get no trade, no tourism, no nothing from the US".... there is literally no sense in rewarding such a regime with commerce, trade, tourism, or anything... just cut ties altogether and be done with them.

if they really want closer ties with the US, they can start by paying our business the 7 billion dollars they stole.... and maybe signing a treaty that they won't steal from us again, or support sworn enemies.
for that, we'd let the Castors stay in power, and we could give them a lil taste of commerce... .a very small one at first ( ya can't trust thieves).

and besides all that, why would anyone want ot normalize relations with a bullying imperialist country?.... if we're so bad as you think we are, what could we possibly offer them but additional hardship and damage?... maybe it would be smart of the Castro's to refuse normalized realtions with the great satan.

leave the CIA and its decades of dirty tricks out of this

no one has ever been fearful of Cuba..... fearful of their backers ( USSR), sure... but never Cuba.

it's easy to cut ties with a country that you can live without just fine.... and , literally, Cuba has nothing we can't do without ,or get elsewhere from better people..... the US doesn't benefit from normalized ties to Cuba, only Cuba benefits ( the Castros)

dealing with China is a lot like dealing with Cuba.... ****ing commies/socialist are always stealing ****.... with Cuba, they steal physical property, with China, it's primarily intellectual property.
the only difference is , it takes no balls or smarts to deal with Cuba... .it's like swatting a mosquito.... China is a whole nuther ballgame... the US doesn't have the balls or smarts to deal with them adequately... we just let them steal whatever they want , when they want, and don't even put up much of a fight about it.

50 years later and they are still defying us. have you been in a coma for 60 years?

Commerce, trade, and tourism does not "reward" the regime - rather, it helps the Cuban PEOPLE, and demonstrates to them: hey, commerce and trade and tourism are BETTER for us Cubans than this socialist crap our government is selling us!

And it's good for us Americans, too.

Side note: I long for the day I can sail my boat to Cuba. I hear it's a gorgeous place!

Canadians and Europeans have already been doing it for decades.

So the Castros are going to hand over an entire goddamned country because we told them to.
