NYC mayoral candidate Brad Lander handcuffed by ICE

So I guess you don't actually give a shit about the law? Or are you suggesting that activists should start using some other activists? If so, then what?

And yes, "liberals" are going to keep fighting for their rights. That's how activism works. Or perhaps you think Martin Luther King Jr, Gandhi, and other civil rights activists should have thrown in the towel the first time they got arrested?

I'm saying the law is irrelevant when you are facing fascists because they don't care about it. Constantly saying what they are doing illegal like it's going to stop them, over and over again is just worthless at this point.

What liberals are doing is not activism at this point either, it's political theater and performative while screaming into the void about the legality of something as this admin continues to just ignore the court rulings about what they are doing is illegal.

The protests only happening one day on the weekend and not being a constant pressure of protesting is not good activisim. It's telegraphing everything to them and they ride it out and ignore them, like they did, and they have kept carrying on.

Then what should we do to stop ICE?

Liberals gonna learn. Laws apply to them too. The horror.

What law?

I don't see any law being broken here other than ICE making an ILLEGAL arrest on an American citizen.

Your constitution is a ****ing joke. Your "we're the best country in the world" is an idle boast. American 'government' is little more than a well dressed biker gang raping the country

Don't need to be. They're federal crimes.

Not sure it is that simple:

8 USC 1357: Powers of immigration officers and employees

(a)Powers without warrant

Any officer or employee of the Service authorized under regulations prescribed by the Attorney General shall have power without warrant--

(1) to interrogate any alien or person believed to be an alien as to his right to be or to remain in the United States;
(2) to arrest any alien who in his presence or view is entering or attempting to enter the United States in violation of any law or regulation made in pursuance of law regulating the admission, exclusion, expulsion, or removal of aliens, or to arrest any alien in the United States, if he has reason to believe that the alien so arrested is in the United States in violation of any such law or regulation and is likely to escape before a warrant can be obtained for his arrest, but the alien arrested shall be taken without unnecessary delay for examination before an officer of the Service having authority to examine aliens as to their right to enter or remain in the United States;
(3) within a reasonable distance from any external boundary of the United States, to board and search for aliens any vessel within the territorial waters of the United States and any railway car, aircraft, conveyance, or vehicle, and within a distance of twenty-five miles from any such external boundary to have access to private lands, but not dwellings, for the purpose of patrolling the border to prevent the illegal entry of aliens into the United States;
(4) to make arrests for felonies which have been committed and which are cognizable under any law of the United States regulating the admission, exclusion, expulsion, or removal of aliens, if he has reason to believe that the person so arrested is guilty of such felony and if there is likelihood of the person escaping before a warrant can be obtained for his arrest, but the person arrested shall be taken without unnecessary delay before the nearest available officer empowered to commit persons charged with offenses against the laws of the United States; and
(5) to make arrests--

(A) for any offense against the United States, if the offense is committed in the officer's or employee's presence, or
(B) for any felony cognizable under the laws of the United States, if the officer or employee has reasonable grounds to believe that the person to be arrested has committed or is committing such a felony,

if the officer or employee is performing duties relating to the enforcement of the immigration laws at the time of the arrest and if there is a likelihood of the person escaping before a warrant can be obtained for his arrest.
Under regulations prescribed by the Attorney General, an officer or employee of the Service may carry a firearm and may execute and serve any order, warrant, subpoena, summons, or other process issued under the authority of the United States. The authority to make arrests under paragraph (5)(B) shall only be effective on and after the date on which the Attorney General publishes final regulations which (i) prescribe the categories of officers and employees of the Service who may use force (including deadly force) and the circumstances under which such force may be used, (ii) establish standards with respect to enforcement activities of the Service, (iii) require that any officer or employee of the Service is not authorized to make arrests under paragraph (5)(B) unless the officer or employee has received certification as having completed a training program which covers such arrests and standards described in clause (ii), and (iv) establish an expedited, internal review process for violations of such standards, which process is consistent with standard agency procedure regarding confidentiality of matters related to internal investigations.

The Link

Not sure it is that simple:
It would be 5(A) - the obstruction happened in their presence.

It says he prevented them from doing their job by locking arms and forcibly resisting separation for something like 40-50 seconds and was warned that what he was doing was obstruction.

A general strike, overwhelm them with constant protesting through out cities and don't keep having them in the same area or have one big mass of people in one area, spread the protests out all over. Protests can't just be a weekend event, it really has to be a daily thing if you want change, especially at this moment against an authoritarian regime.

Also another thing, protesting how the state wants you to protest is still showing obedience to the state you are protesting against.

Literally with how Trump and the GOP are selling off beautiful federal land that the public has access to, making sure oil executives and rich scumbags can hoard it for their personal profit or personal pleasure.

The so called I love this country types really don't when they actively destroy it in such a way by voting in a party that thinks everything is for sale and should be bought, since they are always for sale and are easily bought, and when they hate 3/4 of the population that lives in it because they aren't their kind.

Week end warriors.

Arm chair activists.

In the 60's I got arrested four times in one year.

You're not having ANY effect if you don't make them get rid of you. You need civilians being shoved into police vans, some blood on cracked heads, and mass arrests to the point you have to hold them in a sports stadium. That alone ties up police officers and creates beaucoup over time!

That's how you make an impact. You force them to arrest 3 or four thousand people and jamb them into Tiger Stadium...within an hour you have an issue about food and water!

The demonstration does **** all. It's the arrests that impact and a gift that keeps on giving as the petty charges and trials go on for years. The "general public" gets pissed off hearing about it and paying for it so they have to drop the charges. You've cost 'the system' a million or so per person with NO noticeable result.

Well, I'd say that giving up on the law is giving in. Their goal, after all, is to invalidate the rule of law.

Constantly saying what they are doing illegal like it's going to stop them, over and over again is just worthless at this point.
...except that it's clearly motivating lots of people to get off their asses and protest.

And yes, that does matter.

What liberals are doing is not activism at this point either....
Yes, it is. It's showing how ICE doesn't actually care about the law, and isn't going after violent criminals.

So again I ask... What do you propose as an alternative? Giving in? Getting violent? Go on, tell us the superior way to handle the current situation.

Here, before pot was legalized Marijuana demonstrations would be a parade along an approved route, with individuals branching off and stopping traffic on parallel streets.

You have to be annoying and visible to the TV cameras. So we'd fire up a pound at a time and fill the air...get the cops stoned.

And noise....you make big, beautiful irritating noise

This is hilarious. Also reminds me of Portland Oregon in 2020 when the protests were going on there, and people started bringing leaf blowers to deal with the amount of tear gas and other chemical weapons the cops used, a lot of it getting blown back at the cops and feds lol.

But he did.

18 USC 111: Assaulting, resisting, or impeding certain officers or employees
demanding a warrant and for them to identify is not obstruction or impeding...that is exercising rights under law....he has a right to make sure that someone is not being kidnapped.

If that was all he did, they'd have simply ignored him and carried on with their duties.

Citizen: Do you have warrant?

Ice: You’ve crossed the line and you’re under arrest.

Nice country we got here. Looks a lot like the guy they arrested because he told them they should honor the oaths they took. Fascists all the way down.

He wasn't just "handcuffed." He was illegally detained, probably illegally arrested, and taken to a federal facility where apprehended migrants are held.

As a reminder, ICE does not have the authority to arrest US citizens.

He was preventing law enforcement from legally performing their duties. The law enforcement was under no obligation to present Lander with a warrant, and entirely in their right to arrest him for impeding them.

You aren't allowed to block law enforcement. They are free to arrest you for doing so.

Its not obstruction to demand a warrant and proof of who they are.
True. But they didn't handcuff him because he demanded a warrant. They handcuffed him because he physically - and forcibly - prevented federal officers from carrying out their duties.

Probably a Hail Mary for his failing mayoral campaign.

That doesn't say what you think it says. (5)(B) doesn't apply here, (2) does. The actions taken by ICE to arrest the illegal alien fall under section (2) and don't require a warrant, which makes their actions to arrest the illegal alien legal and supported by law, which makes Lander's actions a Federal felony under the already stated law, and (5)(A).

Law enforcement doesn't need a warrant to arrest someone who is committing a felony in their presence.

"New York City Comptroller and Democratic mayoral candidate Brad Lander was arrested Tuesday by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents as he was escorting a defendant out of immigration court, his wife said in a statement. I'm not clear why the Comptroller of New York city would be escorting anyone out of immigration court.

Escort, noun. a person, vehicle, or group accompanying another for protection or as a mark of rank.

What an unusual story. People running for office do really weird things.
