Daniel Biggs Punched Woman in New York City: Police | Law & Crime

Firefighters in New York City were seen on video chasing down a man who punched a woman in the face.

In the footage, a male bicyclist struck the victim in the face, knocking the person down. Four men, identified later as local firefighters, gave chase. Though the individual was on a bike, he clearly slipped a little on a turn, losing a lot of momentum. He was also partially blocked by two women walking dogs. It was then that the firefighters caught him. Police were later seen escorting the bicyclist away.

New York police said that the attacker was Daniel Biggs, 53. He has a lengthy, relevant criminal history, with 18 arrests before this, for claims including robbery, assault, and an August 2 incident in which he allegedly slashed a 26-year-old man in the face.

The alleged motive on the August 26 was unclear; the woman and Biggs did not know each other, police said. The woman sustained a cut on her mouth, while Biggs also punched one of the firefighters in the incident, officers said.

This prick should be in prison

This piece of **** will probably get released without bail. It is New York after all.

Where's the CNN Racist Firefighters Attack Black Cyclist link?

Yep, that NY bail "reform" law is a great idea. ;)

That allows folks, like this man with lengthy criminal records, to make them longer even faster.

And just like that we've got someone advocating for an uglier policy (by criticizing one that isn't as ugly) in light of a bad dude.

There are bad dudes. I would be shocked if there was a state that did not have a mechanism for what here in MA we call dangerousness hearings. There's no reason to impose bail on people who cannot afford it, not unless the idea is to stop the criminal justice system from imploding as a result of people asserting their constitutional right to trial by jury.

What do I mean? 98% or so of cases are resolved in plea. The 'tough on crime' sort will tell themselves it's because all those people are guilty. It isn't. It's because if you are poor and assert your right to trial, you'll be imprisoned for 6-18 months waiting for trial, possibly even longer than you could get on the charge. You lose everything. Home, possessions, job, everything.

So do you plead to the small time drug offense and save all that? Or do you assert your rights and lose everything, with your best hope being acquitted and homeless?

There are few things more unAmerican than using the actions of one scum-sucking piece of **** to justify a broad brush policy that wreaks evils abound.

And be beaten with clubs. But supporting a civilized society, I suppose I can't demand that.

Good. Tackled his ass off the bike. I hope they got a few good shots in.

The **** is wrong with some people . . .

I get the feeling he will not do well in prison population
They all have mothers.

NO don't put NY state in the same category as New York CITY
Just to let people know there IS a whole state out there that is NOT the city
did you know that Washington DC is almost 100 miles closer to NYC then Buffalo NY is
and once you get above the line that runs across NY and PA ( if it was extended across to Mass ) there are Hundreds of miles of Farm land and forests
So please do not consider what happens in that S---hole city as what would happen in the rest of the state
Have a nice day

Do you not see your ass backwards thinking here? Seriously.

Out on the streets before their victims are home from the hospital.

I liked that comment, but I hate to like it because one of the worst things about our criminal court system is our attitude towards prison. Any number of people will joke about/cheer on stuff like prison rape. But what just society would allow rape and the like as punishment? The punishment is abject loss of rights and freedoms.

Me - I get your point on humanity.
When our young and old are beaten/killed, well most people do have a vengeful side

Facts are some criminals do not do well in prison.

Oh, I understand the human element. I understand that side. The thought of a person intentionally hurting a child of mine . . .

Hell.

NY bail laws are STATE laws. They just don't impact your life if you live upstate in a forest. And the other poster didn't specify state or city

Correction: This person should have already been in jail so that this would have never happened. At some point you just need to keep these kind of people locked up for good. But, they will let this person right back out to commit yet more crimes. Crime pays when they keep on letting you back out to do it over and over again.

But at what point is that?

We need to figure that out. But, it is totally ridiculous to even let non violent people be career criminals, let alone violent ones. Why should my home be broken into be a person who has 18 arrests over ten years for breaking into people's homes? I get sick and tired of people being the victims (including murders) by people who have been arrested over and over and over again. As soon as it is clear they are going to be nothing but career criminals then they should be locked up for good. Maybe three violent strikes and you're out, five non violent strikes and you're out. Let society figure out the details but having people like this running around loose all the time is just plain stupid. And, we'll let this guy right back out and your grandmother will be the next victim. Why should we do that?

We already incarcerate people at a higher rate then any western country. At what point will we wake up and see that it is not working?
