Whatever your take is on the events of 9/11....whether you accept the mainstream media's account of what happened, are a 9/11 Truther, or lie somewhere in between....one thing is certain in my mind: The NYC Community Board's decision to agree to the erection of a mosque near Ground Zero is reckless and insensitive. I don't have a problem with a mosque being built in general, but why there and why now?

If they were to prevent it not only would it be violating freedom of religion (through freedom of religious assembly) but they would also be regulating what may be done on private property. I agree that it is very insensitive for the Muslims community to build a mosque near Ground Zero, but they have every legal right to build it and should not be stopped.

It's not at Ground Zero and it's not even a mosque. It's a 13 story building that has a mosque in it. Preventing its construction would be a violation of property and personal rights.

Someone has yet to explain to me why a mosque is not cool but having a Burger King, a symbol of commercialism, AT ground zero is totally fine

all quite good responses. I shall take the opportunity to inflame the discussion, as is, reportedly, my wont.

it was not american muslims that flew into the towers. denying them the right to join in memory of the people killed is, in effect, blaming americans for the crime.

we should be proud of them. I can assure you, Bin Laden and his murderous minions are not.

geo.

What is wrong with commercialism?

Try to open a Starbucks in a school, a park, a church, or library and you'll have PLENTY of people explaining it.

Something about using tragic events or public spaces to sell products tends to torque people off

I fall into the mindset that the best memorial for those who died on 9/11 is to rebuild. That would obviously (at least to me) mean bringing business etc back to the location.

Again, try to open a Starbucks AT the WTC and you'd swiftly find out that mentality is somewhat among the minority when it comes to people

I agree. I'd also include "not permanently changing our views on freedom of religion."

To me, it was not Islam that attacked us on 9/11, it was a group of radical fanatics. Therefore, establishing a Mosque, which no one has shown will in any way be radical, in the area is fine with me.

I think people are making a big deal over something that is not a big deal.
