Illegal immigration is a hot button issue these days. One part of the discussion includes "anchor babies"- babies born in the US to parents who crossed the border illegally. Because of this, some might advocate getting rid of birthright citizenship.

According to Pew Research center, the number of children born to illegal immigrants has been falling since 2008. The number of "anchor babies" has steadily increased from 30,000 in 1980. That number peaked at 390,000 in 2007 but has fallen to 250,000 by 2016.

Not only are the number of "anchor babies" born going down, but the growth of illegal immigration has also slown down since 2007.

Not only are the number of "anchor babies" born going down, but the growth of illegal immigration has also slown down since 2007.

So? That number should be 0. 30,000 or 250,000 is a lot more than zero.

Not only are the number of "anchor babies" born going down, but the growth of illegal immigration has also slown down since 2007.

There is no problem with birthright citizenship, other than it's current interpretation.

I believe it should apply to the babies of two classes of people; those who are already citizens of course and those who are legal residents of the United States.

IMO it should NOT apply to either illegal residents or temporary visitors. I argue that both those classes would not have been considered by the author of the 14th Amendment when he referred to "All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof,..."

IMO temporary visitors would include foreigners here on student, tourist, and seasonal work visas. Foreign diplomats are already excluded.

Legal residents would include those foreigners who have permanent resident status (IMO this was what United States v. Wong Kim Ark, 169 U.S. 649 applied to), and those with permission allowing them to reside while pursuing citizenship (i.e. legal immigrants).

Illegal residents include anyone who has entered the country without permission regardless of grounds, especially those who cross simply to have a baby on American soil to "anchor" themselves and circumvent immigration law.
