Do you guys think that nuclear bombs are ok?
At first I thought they were ok, but then I watched a video on Chernobyl. Coming from Ukriane I saw the video completly differently from the way that everyone commented it. I guess the pride in my country really spawned out in that moment. After that I was thinking of what if we nuked the middle east? As much as I hate them I think that no one should have to go through seeing thier whole land completly destroyed and inoccent people killed because of what OTHER people did but they were from the same place.
On the other hand I can see it in a positive way of the people of the middle east should do something about it or they are jsut as guilty. The people in the former Solviet Union deserved it because they made a mistake but what about the peopel in Pryate sp?. Did they really deserve to all become radiated? And what about those in Belarus?

I would really rather find it more of a threat, because if we told the people of the middle east that if they dont do something about the terrorists and give us Osama we will nuke them.

What do you guys think....

Nukes are fine, it's the misuse and threats of use that are not. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the existence of nuclear weapons or energy in the least though if it's safely and responsibly used.

Unfortunately, we live in a country where having the bomb is like an extension of our collective penis.

I have always thought life would be much better, safety wise, off if no guns or explosives that could cause collateral damage were created.

How many criminal or terrorist acts would occur if all they had were knives, swords, and small projectile weapons?

Yeah. Easier to press that red button then to actually have to dirty your hands :P

Weapons are constantly upgraded to give one an advantage over his enemy. Just like predators bodies are constantly evolving to give them an advantage over their prey, and their prey constantly evolves to give them an advantage over their predator. What we are doing with weapons is something along the lines of social evolution.

1. Chernobyl was a nuclear powerplant
2. nobody deserves the results of a catastrophic accident, except for those whose neglect caused it

Before 1944, humanity did not have the power to bring about its own extinction. Now, it does... and even with all of the powerful, good uses for nuclear energy, I still can't help but feel that this is a genie we should have left in the bottle.

I am all for the peaceful use of nuclear technology, but I dread the day when we-- or someone else-- decides to actually use nuclear weapons again. Twice was more than enough.

But do you agree that there should come a time in evolution when a population casts away its methods of decimating itself and instead lives to make living better?

I wish they had never learned to split the atom, and the scientists that discovered this technology, feel the same way.

It's an old book, but read a copy of "The Fate of the Earth," by Jonathan Schell.

If I were Prez, I'd lead the charge to total world disarmament.

Should? Maybe. Likely? No. Mankind is an inherently warlike species, we'll never throw down our arms and have a group-hug and sing kumbayah like all the idealistic liberals want us to do, it's just not in our nature. Nukes will eventually go away when we create bigger and better and more powerful weapons, but not before.

sad
but true, in all likelihood, for the foreseeable future

Don't get me wrong, Cephus, I was being hypothetical. This entire debate is idealistic in nature, seeing as that nuclear weapons aren't going anywhere anytime soon, and I know that perfectly well. I'm not an "idealistic liberal". I don't campaign causes that will never be won.

I never said you were, sorry if that wasn't clear. That's the problem with being too idealistic, it rarely meshes well with reality and in the end, reality is all that matters.
