HOBBS, N.M. (AP) — National Transportation Safety Board Vice Chairman Bruce Landsberg said Thursday that a 13-year-old was driving the pickup truck that struck a van in West Texas in a fiery collision that killed nine people.

The truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact, Landsberg said.

One must be 14 in Texas to start taking classroom courses for a learner’s license and 15 to receive that provisional license to drive with an instructor or licensed adult in the vehicle. Department of Public Safety Sgt. Victor Taylor said a 13-year-old driving would be breaking the law.

The truck’s left front tire, which was a spare tire, also blew out before impact, he said.

Although it was unclear how fast the two vehicles were traveling, “this was clearly a high-speed collision,” Landsberg said.


A very inexperienced driver who was breaking the law had a tire (the tire was a spare)blow out lost control and struck the van.

There's a two lane highway of about twenty miles long I have to drive to get to my parents' house. Speech limit is 65mph. Every time I see an oncoming vehicle traveling the opposite direction I think about the possibility of it veering into my lane of traffic.

Legally they should not be allowed at all, in my evil Democrat Liberal Woke opinion, because of all the incidents of accidents from folks not heeding the inherent danger of using those substitutes for regular driving, such as this one illustrated in the OP.

Many adults aren't above being too ill informed or indifferent to the catastrophic danger(s) of driving like normal on what should obviously be apparent to those folks to be abnormal tires.

Well if I was reading the story correctly the 13 y/o wasn’t alone in the truck and there was a 38 y/o with him.

Which opens up other questions. The article doesn’t explain their relationship, I don’t know if it was an unofficial driving lesson, or if the adult was impaired/suspended license etc. also it’s clear that whatever the reason, the driver likely didn’t know how to handle a front tire blow out, which is to hit the accelerator and speed up. If the tire blew out and the kid panicked and either let go of the wheel or hit the brakes that would cause the swerve. So pro-tip, regardless of whether you’re thirteen or 53, if your front tire blows at speed you death grip the wheel and apply accelerator until the vehicle is traveling straight again then pull over.

I typically buy larger vehicles so I haven’t needed to deal with the donut tire. A few years ago I had a 96 crown Victoria which had one, and after learning that I bought another rim at a junk yard and put a normal tire on it.

I’m amazed a dodge pickup had one though, normally I’ve only seen those tires on smaller vehicles. I can’t imagine a dodge truck with a bed full of hay or towing a trailer is safe with those small ones on. And the customer is already paying 50 grand at the lot, no need to cheap out on a spare tire

Wasn't one of those. 3/4 ton, heavy duty trucks have full size spares of the same load capacity as the other tires standard on the truck.
