NPR forced to issue apology to Trump Jr. Fox News Published on Dec 1, 2018

Turns out Trump Jr. did not lie during testimony alleged to contradict Cohen's testimony about the Trump building project.

NPR rushed a story without verification of the facts, and the MSM ran with it.

Trump Jr. was talking about a different issue in his testimony, and said nothing to contradict (or support) the issue raised by Cohen's testimony.

NPR made the correction that same day as a proper and respected news outlet is supposed to do.

Remember that this is a big deal because it happens so rarely and we all know NPR is a credible news source. Nobody is surprised when Fox News doesn't retract its stories because everybody knows it's fake news and a propaganda mouthpiece for the White House.

Here was NPR's editor's note:

Editor's note: An earlier version of this report mischaracterized an answer Donald Trump Jr. gave to Senate investigators in 2017 about the prospective projects his family was negotiating with people in Moscow.

The story reported that Trump Jr.'s response — that negotiations on one project concluded by the end of 2014 — contrasted with the version of events as laid out in the guilty plea by Michael Cohen on Thursday. In fact, Trump Jr. and investigators were alluding to a different set of negotiations — not to a deal that Cohen was reportedly pursuing. Trump Jr. did acknowledge in his testimony that Cohen and another man were exploring a possible deal in Moscow in 2015 or 2016.

Trump Jr. did not address what Cohen has now admitted — that talks about such a deal continued at least into June 2016, longer than previously known and well into the presidential campaign.

Fox news almost never retracts its stories yet whoops and hollers like it's some great victory when the 'other side' does its journalistic duty and corrects itself.

Let's see Fox line up every damn birther they ever had on and issue a retraction and an apology.

It's a massive Irony, when right-wing outlets who never admit they are wrong and always peddle in lies and half-truths act like it's a big moral win for them when the opposition plays by the rules.

And in any case isn't Don Jr still lying about the purpose of the Trump Tower meeting? When the Mueller investigation establishes (as if it isn't painfully obvious already) that the purpose was to gather dirt on the opposition stolen from DNC servers, Fox's yapping heads will barely be able to scream 'fake new' through all the yoke streaming down their faces.

Considering that Mueller is looking at the RW lies about Seth Rich and is about to indict one perhaps two birthers, let me be the first to say, WTF cares???? NPR made a mistake and fixed it. Why are conservatives always shocked when news outlets do that?

Considering that they often have climate change deniers and anti-vax people still to this day. You are asking for a lot here.

Here was the original NPR report:

https://web.archive.org/web/2018113...nflicts-with-cohen-s-account-of-russian-talks

Here is what they did after it was found incorrect:

The article was not retracted, even though its entire premise was incorrect. The title was changed to “Cohen's Account Of Russia Talks Raises Questions About Trump Jr. 2017 Testimony,” even though there are no questions, except for why NPR didn’t do even a little bit of legwork to make sure it was accurately reporting something. The body of the article no longer includes the clipped exchange, and has to strain to make Trump Jr. look involved:

Trump Jr. told the Senate Judiciary Committee in September 2017 that he was only "peripherally aware" of negotiations that Cohen has admitted to carrying on through June 2016. Cohen said in his guilty plea that he had briefed Trump's family members about his talks, although the court documents don't specify who.

Trump Jr. also told Senate investigators that he wasn't aware that Cohen had reached out to the press secretary for Vladimir Putin as part of his talks with Moscow about a putative new Trump Tower project there.
So, the NPR story went from “Trump Jr. Lied To Congress” to a media outlet trying to save face by reporting on an exchange that happened a year ago.
https://www.dailywire.com/news/38923/npr-tries-fails-prove-donald-trump-jr-lied-senate-ashe-schow

So, there was no retraction, the story was simply modified. They changed the title from "“Trump Jr.'s 2017 Testimony Conflicts With Cohen's Account Of Russian Talks” to the new title; “Cohen's Account Of Russia Talks Raises Questions About Trump Jr. 2017 Testimony."

This is a problem with much of the news. They post something, make a mistake, and instead of honestly apologizing and retracting what do they do? They make a statement "correcting it" leaving a story in place acting like there still was a "breaking story" in the first place. Meanwhile people have already gone on a Twitter/Facebook/etc. (even in this Forum) storm of "GOTCHA!" and will continue to roll with it until someone bothers to point the correction out.

The fact that this IS a "trusted source" is what makes it worse that they don't broadcast a correction as loudly as they originally reported the wrong story AND retract the story where there was no story.

The damage was done, and no real effort to undo it.

Good for NPR for the quick correction & apology. I wish all media orgs acted in like manner.

NPR guilty of fake news. I'm shocked, shocked I tell you.

It is obvious that trump is involved, only in remains legally unproven. Therefore they only did their journalistic duty by reporting the obvious but maintaining the facade that trump is innocent until proven guilty. We already know the reason for the trump tower meetings and it is a reasonable assumption that Trump ordered it. For legal PROOFTM, we must wait for Mueller.

It is different from posting lies

What do you consider 'fake news'? An immediately-corrected mistake? You guys don't even know what that term means.
'Fake news'. Thats what your serial liar calls any source that's critical of his lies. There isn't a 'fake news' source anywhere that's less reliable than the President of the United States.

More or less the Trumpian news position isn't it? Post fake news, deny facts, stick with it, never admit failure even when proven wrong. But when a reputable outlet corrects a story a day or two later that's somehow 'proof' they're peddling fake news. No they are maintaining journalistic standards.

This was almost immediately corrected, why are you still posting about this? Let me guess.

The same reason Grim17 goes on and about about two tough questions that a reporter once asked Ivanka. They love the Trump Crime Family and to troll about pointless topics.

well yeah, of course. Same with lies. Trump likes 5000+ times including in ways that make him look like he's intent on covering up crimes, on matters of national security, etc.
But Obama lied twice!

Same thing! Both sides lie therefore we can do as we please!

Would it be too much to identify the title of the NPR article? Or perhaps even provide a link to it?

Is the article an editorial (and if so, is it op-ed or NPR's own) or news reporting and/or analysis? A link or something that'd allow us to know of what article you/Fox remark would help answer that question. The nature of the article matters because it tells us who bears the preponderant onus for the mistake and credit for having the integrity to issue the subsequently provided correction.

As for the matter of the correction:
  • According to the video NPR issued a correction five hours -- not fifteen, fifty, five days or five weeks, months or years later, but five hours -- after publishing the article.
    • That's definitely a timely-enough correction that there's no basis for recriminating NPR for having made the mistake. The error came quickly to NPR's attention and it corrected its article to reflect the verity of the matter.
    • Five hours later hardly sounds like NPR's being "forced" to issue an apology. It sounds like NPR learned of (realized) its errant assertion and amended the article to correct it. That's what one expects of anyone who publicly makes an untrue/inaccurate assertion about something verisimilitudinous.
      • Did NPR issue an apology? Trump, Jr.'s tweet and the text of the video indicate it did not.

Good points.

I wonder what would happen if FOXNews or Trump Corp., had to retract and apologize for every lie or misinformation they put out? There wouldn't even be any time left for commercials! LOL!

Great! It's good to see honest organizations apologize when they make a mistake. How many times have we seen Trump apologize for his mistakes? None?

They'd have to do a day of "news" then a day of retractions, a day of news....

Good that they corrected themselves like real journalists do. Where is your outrage when Fox lies and misrepresents stories and doesn't retract?

They placed the correction at the beginning where everybody could see it, and they did it within hours of it publishing. Exactly as a reliable, reputable news outlet is supposed to do.

But Republicans view making corrections as a weakness, which is another reason they're leaping on NPR. A show of strength, in their eyes, would be to stand by the story even as it was shown to be incorrect.

More illustrative is that Fox News is saying NPR apologized even though they didn't. This is important because Republicans view apologies as the biggest show of weakness of them all. To Republicans, correcting the story wasn't a display of integrity but an act of weakness, which further explains why you don't see retractions by Fox News.

Good, reliable, reputable news outlets verify facts before they rush to publish.

The best news outlets make mistakes and they makes corrections as soon as possible. Let's be clear: NPR is reputable and high quality. For this reason, the error was rare and is why Republicans are leaping on this. They know they won't have another opportunity to rag on them for a long time.

All significantly large scale human endeavors deal with mistakes.

HOW they deal with them, is the only important question.

NPR - correct it within 5 hours.
Trump/Right wing propaganda - deny, deny, deny

They'd have to do a day of "news" then a day of retractions, a day of news....

Or, just run the retractions after 9:00 pm. After their base audience already have their teeth in the jar, head on the pillow, sawing logs.

Who's gonna know? LOL!

You mean the same corporation that is hiding from the big scary social media company Trump loves, where their lies are exposed on a daily basis and members targeted their number two pirmetime host b/c of the countless lies and hateful things he has said??? That corporation???
