More of a timeline:

It would be fun to see this timeline extended into the next hundred years. A poli-sci graduate class project, and a good graphic designer, could get the update published.
It would be, though the focus on name of the party versus political ideology can be a little misleading. The ideology of the modern democrat shares nothing with that of say 100 years ago, much like the ideology of the modern republican is nothing like that of Lincoln, whom they want to claim as their own.

It is exactly those morphing ideologies that cause those lines to intertwine and change sides. That's the beauty of the diagram. It depicts the drifting across boundaries of belief and policy. No doubt showing the next hundred years would demonstrate times that Republicans and Democrats converge, overlap, and diverge again, as well as showing extremist offshoots that fade in and out of the picture, just as "Free Soil" and "Hunkers" do in the diagram.
