Not Just Putin: Most Russians Support the War in Ukraine

Amid the shock and horror of Russia’s Ukraine invasion, many have sought to blame everything solely on Vladimir Putin. As international audiences try to make sense of the unthinkable scenes currently unfolding in the heart of Europe, it is convenient to believe that Putin has simply lost his mind.

There is something reassuring about the idea that the carnage in Ukraine is all down to the criminal insanity of one man. However, talk of “Mad Vlad” is a comforting myth that disguises a far darker reality.

While the Russian ruler’s well-documented Ukraine obsession has been instrumental in sparking the largest European conflict since World War II, his decision to invade Ukraine was entirely consistent with longstanding public statements and foreign policy goals that are enthusiastically embraced by a clear majority of Russians. This is their war just as much as it is Putin’s.

If you think that Russians who oppose Putin's war of aggression can be open about their beliefs, then I have an enormous bridge to sell you.

Will this bridge be funded by Biden's Build Back Better? Because if Congress writes me the cheque, then I could afford to buy it.

Polls in Russia? That’s like going to Chicagos south side or Detroit and asking if they prefer Trump or Obama.
...Yes? The point is to establish what percentage of Russians support the war their country is currently waging, where else are you going to go to poll said Russians on said war? Australia?

Why bother even doing polling in Russia? Like Chicago or Detroit choosing Obama or Trump the answer is right in front of your eyes.

They've been told that a Nazi faction has taken power in Ukraine and Russian troops are just rooting them out.
They've been told lots of lies. They have no source of information to base a decision on except Putin's propaganda organs.

There seems to be some of this propaganda coming out in your country too - or could it possibly have some truth to it?

...Because ratios are important, my guy. Knowing whether half of Russians like Putin or if 90% of them like him is important information that informs foreign policy and how we handle more nefarious parts of information warfare. The answer isn't as simple as a light switch, it's a gradient.

They are brainwashed with Putin's propaganda, just like many "conservatives" in the US are brainwashed with trump's propaganda.....weak minds are easily fooled.....repeat lies often enough and gullible people will believe them as truth.

I Don't open video links. What is that?

They only GET one source of news and information these days, and in the runup to the invasion, independent media was clamped down.
Putin has been enjoying the luxury of being the ONLY view that they get, the only voice that they hear.

Hypothetical 1939 ( @sanman ) :

"Most Germans Support Third Reich, Final Solution to Jewish Problem"

Hitler's campaign to rid the German republic of the international cabal of Jewish bolsheviks and free the empire of their evil influence
is going smashingly and the iconic German leader has earned unrivaled praise for his efforts to build a strong defense, bond with the church
and preserve the master race.

I dont think alot of people here realize it, but Putin enjoys majority support in Russia.

I guess you don't understand how any Russian that responded against the war in Ukraine could be dealt with. I mean they are rounding up protestors aren't they? Kind of naive on your part don't you think?

What about what about!

Nice try but no enchilada.

Yep..... and most people that watch nothing but Fox News support Trump. If you live in a controlled environment, you tend to be controlled. These people are not expressing their support out of really understanding the alternative. They lack the information necessary to make an informed opinion. This is a poll of the ignorant. Garbage In, Garbage Out.

BTW. Why are you touting this? Why are you pro-Putin?

Oh. My. God. :ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO::ROFLMAO:

I expect that most Russians in Russia believe Ukraine to be "the Ukraine" and that it's nothing more than a breakaway secesh state that needs to be reconquered and shown the evil of it's ways, just like the ChiComs believe that Taiwan is still part of China.

It doesn't help that the media in Russia is just as reliably pro-authoritarian as 95% of the print and broadcast media in the US. The Russians don't have the advantage of that 5% the Americans do, and the Russians most certainly do not have a heritage of freedom that's being stolen from them. They've never been free and because of that why should we expect them to respect the desires for freedom in Ukraine and elsewhere? Socialists are socialists are socialists and all socialists are tyrants.

But Russia has to conscript it's troops, too.
